handclaps, i know this was covered

i know there was a post in the forum about this earlier, but i don't think it got answered fully. my hand claps sound so lifeless. i don't really have many options as far as mic's. i just have an sm-57. so i have a couple of questions. i thought the idea of a slight delay was a very good one, but how many people should be clapping? and what kind of eq settings are best?

I don't know about all that..
but flame recently posted a site called
www.findsounds.com

and if you enter hand claps a whole bunch of them come up and if you want to reinforce them even more (what i do) is taking the attack from the snare but only that no reverberating snare sound and i take the attack of the clap just a little tiny bit so it sounds ok don't let the snare get too loud

hope this helps

and my claps I always cut the mids it sounds better IMO and then i record about 10 claps or so , just so it sounds as if there were a group of people clapping. and don't let them all start exactly on the same spot just a sort of delay but not an effect just move the claps a few milliseconds from eachother so it sounds fuller
than you could try to pan each clap so it sounds as if there are a group of people around you

wow this is my longest post ever:P lol

hope this helps

heh, i thoughtthis thread was going to be about handclaps used in electronic music, like the ones from the famous Roland drum machines.

i've never tried to mic claps before, but something tells me room characterists are important or that sound. the 57 shound be fine. try getting a group of firneds involved and back the mic up a little to capture any reverb if it exists.

UG - check the following link out! Hope it helps. Do a search on "roland" and you'll find their classic claps that are still being used by P.Diddy, Ying Yang Twinz etc...

powersamples.free.fr/hits.htm

Enjoy!

haha, actually that's what it kind of is. right after the chorus, the song goes into a key change. Whereas it was Cm, Cmadd6, Ab, G7, it becomes C, Cadd6, Gsus4, G7. In other words it becomes really "happy." The entire band starts singing and clapping, and eventually all the music stops except for the handclaps and singing. So we're just going to get like 20 friends to come in and sing and clap. Should be cool. I have hand claps in another song too, for which that Roland sound might work bettter. Thank you for the links.

the only chord there i can't figure out is the Gsus4. i have no idea how to sus the 4 :OP

i strummed them like this and it's a moving little progression, kinda spanish sounding the way i strummed it (i was listening to a flamenco record earlier)
how i did it in order as EADGBE

Cm:
x 3 5 5 4 3

Cmadd6:
x 3 6 5 4 3

Ab:
4 6 6 5 4 4

G7:
3 2 0 0 0 1

oh and now that i think about it i'm not sure about the Cadd6 either

ok, maybe i'm retarded, when i said add6, i just meant you add a low A to the low E on the C minor chord. and the Gsus4 is actually G7sus4

www.chordfind.com is a handy little site for looking up chords.

Here it is in EADGBE

Cm: 335543
Cmadd6: 535343
Ab: 466544
G7: 35343

then

C: 335553
C6: 535553
G7sus4: 353533
G7: 353433

i play piano and guitar, and my theory is kind of decent, but as you can tell nowhere near good. If you guys want to tell me the correct name of that 2nd chord I just showed you I would be very thankful.

haha, well i guess that is the wonder in music, simple can be absolutely beautiful. after everything i've learned in music, some of my favorite songs are the simplest. but at the same time, i used to think that theory was just annoying and useless, but it's just another tool that you can use to make music, and as long as your knowledge of theory is used as a means to creating something that sounds good then the more power to it you know? think about it this way, all of your technical knowledge about computers, gear, acoustics and how they work in the end is helping you create better sounding recordings. in the same way me learning about music theory helps me create interesting chord progressions.

ug, I am guilty as well of writing long winded at times. I guess that is how I got into the sound track thing and games. Long winding melodies with plenty of variation. I still love the four chord jams as well though as dB put it, you can go a long way on four chords if they are the right chords.
