..what to buy for a home recording soundcard, I saw this at presonus.com, the presonus firestation. For the price of 499 USD, can anyone tell me what the drawbacks are on it vs. the motu 828mkII? I can see the basics, however, product quality, and tech specs, how are they comparatively? I am going to run from my laptop, (transitioning from Yamaha 4416). Whats the catch? It has 8 mic preamps, motu 828 only 2, 8 inputs, motu the same, why so cheap? You know how some "good deals" aren't so good when reading the fine print. I can read the fine print, just don't know what it means...
BTW, I want 8 inputs for drum kit recording and some live recording, and to run from my laptop via a pcmcia card adapter... thanks...

Well, I went and double checked the specs and they all look pretty good to me. I did notice however that there were some driver limitations that seemed a bit odd to me. The two top wave editing programs Wavelab, Sound Forge only had drivers for WDM written for them. That is very odd considering the wide use of those two products for mastering and such. And I also noticed ASIO use was pretty limited to Stienberg products. This tells me there might be some problems down the road, but maybe they just havent released them yet. It appears that it can only run two input channels with some applications as of yet. I guess my best advice would be to contact their tech or sales dept. and inquire with your specifics, ie: what DAW you are planning to run and so-on. This might give you a better head up.

Otherwise, as I said it looks like the unit has some pretty good specs, it can be used stand alone as well as hooked in via firewire. The only other limitations I saw were oonly recording 24 bit at 44.1k or 48k. Now this really inst a limit, but it may account for the lower price tag.
