It's in the Pro Instrumental section. It's got a new guitar track. This is an almost-finished version, I'm going to clean up the bass tomorrow, I noticed the rythymn was off a little. Let me know what you think, hope you all dig it.

*update* The song should now be finished! :) Check it out.

Wow, some real nice playing there Tincan! When you get the final done be sure and post, I'm gonna put that one in my indie folder with all my other music I listen too. :)

mix wise real nice but bass seems a little low here, other than that seems real good.

Very nice, I like the added guitar in there now. Not overdone at all, just the right amount of guitar and it sits very well in the mix. Nice live sound as well.

Made the following changes: compressed guitar. fixed bass rythymm. lowered bass eq of bass track. I think it's a keeper.

Please comment if you have a moment, I'd love to hear what you think, good or bad. Thanks.

Yep I think you've got it now Tincan! I really dig the whole feel of the song.

One thing I think (emphasis on think ?-) is some jazz style rhytm guitar would really push this one too the top, then again it might just be too much. Either way though I'm putting this one in my collection! :)

Great job!

Jazz-style guitar? hmmm.... I think that's straying a bit from the Spartan feel I was aiming for. I think I see what you mean, but I like it as-is.

I'm listening now... I think I have a little mastering yet to do. I've used no verb, no chorus, no nuthin'. And maybe judicious use of the pitch shifter in CEP2 will fix my guitar intonation's painfully shrieking quarter-tone bends... or maybe it's more trouble than it's worth... hahahaha

[fzappa]or maybe a couple'a quarts of beer... will fix it so the intonation does not offend your ear... and the same old chords, playing over and over, become a symphony... I can play it again and again and again 'cuz it sounds so good to me... one more time![/fzappa]

"...all that boppy funk bass stuff."

Well, it's actually me working out my rage... I can't seem to pick up a bass without slapping the hell out of it repeatedly.

{{{WHACK!}}} "you like that?!?"
{{{POP!}}} "huh?!"
{{{SMACK!}}} "whoozhyer daddy, bi-aaaatch?!!"

Thanks for the compliment... :) I'm glad you like my stuff.

Good god, that last post was pretty hilarious. So I gave it a listen...

The song was cool, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the drums weren't matching the beat of the bass and guitar. Kinda like an orchestrated chaos of minimality. Or kinda like some one didn't get the memo and showed up to the drum circle with a guitar and a bassist and they scared off most of the drummers. Other than that, the bass still seems under-represented to me. But still a cool piece.

Thanks for your thoughts. I can see why you would say that, this song was one of the least planned-out things I've ever done. In a very real way, it was a kind of study for me... I had an idea of incorporating just a couple or a few instruments into a really lively, hopping, snapping piece, without adding tons of background "support" from other instruments. And the parts were basicly spontaneous... so it's actually less a song than a jam.

I think I got something out of my system with this one... can't say what exactly though. :) I have some totally different stuff in mind for a new one. A ballad type of song, not so snappy, maybe sad. With lyrics this time. I want to sing... I haven't sung in my little closet for a while... hahahaha guess I'll just have to see what happens.

"And the parts were basicly spontaneous... so it's actually less a song than a jam. "

Hence the title "Slap Jam" I guess...

Anyways, don't get me wrong, I still liked the piece. I mean, I listened to it for like 15 minutes on loop, all the while nodding my head. It's cool.

"Anyways, don't get me wrong..."

:) Naw, man, don't worry about it. I learn way more from one critical comment than from a dozen cheers of, "hey you rock" (not that I don't appreciate a sincere high-five, haha). I hear where you're coming from. I wouldn't say that this is the best thing I've done by any means, but it does mark a stylistic development for me. Most of my stuff to date (from early 90's on) is focused on background soundscapes, lots of tracks (when it was possible, that is, haha), big noise and chasing a layered, lush sound whenever possible. With this one I just wanted to run as far as I could with it in the opposite direction, and focus on the playing rather than the soundscape.

you plan songs?....hmmmm, i suppose that could work......hmmmmm. 2 beers, an hour to kill thats my planning. "never had one lesson"
planning songs, next youll be writing out notes and stuff with the cleff thingys and those sheets "musicians" use.... what a shame... hate to see a good man get bogged down with paperwork for the man.

It took a day or two for this to show up in the pro music area, but I see it now.

I think that you definitely accomplished your goal...the song has a very free feeling, not tied to a particular key or mode, it just flows. There is the one good hook in there that the bass and guitar play in unison.

I'm going to have to listen to this at home on the full speaker system because I think that my headphones here at work are robbing the mix of its low end. I can't quite hear the "whack/pop/smack" of the bass guitar :-D or the "thump" of the djembe (or whatever the lower drum sounds are).
