www.musiciansfriend.com has soundproofing and sound couditioning material. Also, you might stop by a used business furnature outlet and pick up a few "cubie" walls. You know used cubicle panels. Lightweight, retilitively portable, sound insolation panels for setting up sound blocking between instruments. Also look here in recording tips. There are some real good tips on building a physical studio. Most studios are built by contractors that specialize in building soundproof rooms.

You don't need to buy anything special for simple sound proofing, windows, perhaps, but your best bet there is to find a windowless corner of your basement to build a room. Everything else just has to be doubled up, build a room within a room, so the bass gets trapped between the double walls...

tuning a room and sound proofing a room are two different things tho, you need to tune the room to. There is a series of articles about building a studio in our tips section under "Do-It-Yourself".

Soundproofing,
I did a my whole studio. I learned a lot of what to do and not to do. To think you can just build double walls is a mistake. Sound is vibration so the vibration must not be transmitted thru wall, ceilings etc. Soundproofing is a science. Tiles do not reduce sound eminating from a room, they actually AMPLIFY it. What they do is reduce the bounce of the waves inside the room which improves the sound quality INSIDE the room only.
Sound Barriers reduce the output of sound from a structure or room. The thicker the barrier, the better, think concrete. (Not feasible in most cases). However, sheetrock mounted on resilient channels (available at your local building store, not home depot) cause the sheetrock to vibrate (it still is very secure) reducing the sound output greatly... Combined with thick rubber matting behind it, you can greatly reduce sound output. I am a relatively loud drummer and converted my garage to a music studio, outside the sound is barely audible from the street, any other instrument is inaudible except LOUD bass and guitars. The low freqs are the ones that cause the problems. Doors become the major cause of soud leakage, and any venting leading outside, etc. (my garage is separate from my house). If you do a search on google.com for soundproofing, you will find a site in Southern Ca that sells all the stuff. There is an excellent government manual that they will sell you that covers all possible soundproofing needs and is really helpful...do a lot of RESEARCH before you start, and do it right! Trust me, I know the trials and tribulations of this stuff!!!

I didn't edit the letters themselves they were still all ghetto lookin, what I did was took out some wacky characters on either side of the letters...it looked like he was righting some PHP scripting variables or something...
