Hi all,
Lookin at the Echo Layla for my lapttop but it doesn't have xlr inputs, only balanced 1/4 inch.
Is there quality lost? How get from a mic with xlr cable? Don't I gain distortion when using converter cable?
How important is it to have mic preamps, it has none.
Any other recommendations for laptop, need 8 inputs.....Thanks again...

balanced 1/4's are pretty good, still three leads it's got a good signal.

There will be no quality difference (At least not perseptable) between using a balanced XLR and balanced TRS cable, which the Layla accepts. Even unbalanced 1/4 will be fine as long as the cable isn't traveling a long way.
You will absolutely need preamps of some sort, since the Layla has none. You can either buy stand alone units, whole rackfulls of 8 or so (Check out ART, PreSonus, and Focusrite preamps for some ideas), or a nice mixer with preamps built in. The Soundcraft mixers are awesome, and Behringer UB's are a great deal for the money, as well. You won't get any sound (hardly) if you don't use a preamp!
By the way, the Layla is a beautiful sounding card and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it :)
Good luck!

Can anyone address the conversion from my shure SM57 xlr into a 1/4 inch? Won't it distort a lot having to use an adapter?

As I said, you won't be going directly into your Layla. You have to have a mic preamp or mixer, almost all of which have XLR inputs. The outputs of these devices are usually both balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4", so you can choose whichever. If you use the balanced XLR outs, just get a balanced XLR to 1/4" TRS cable. That is how the Layla's inputs are intended to be used. The M-Audio Delta 1010 sound card is the same way, as well. Even if you had to go straight from the SM57 to 1/4 inch, you just get the proper impedence matching transformer adapter and you're all set. No distortion involved.

Thanks for the input (no pun intended)..so if I want to record my drums, I have to have all the inputs thru preamps? Are there any laptop solutions out there that are all inclusive that would make this more simple than having to buy all this gear? I am transitioning from a yamaha 4416 which was a great system but I want to interface with friends using cakewalk, etc.
Do any of the delta go to laptops, I have done a bit of research and haven't found any....

scrump775. an alternative if you dont want to buy a mixer or preamps is getting the Aardvark Q10. it is just like the layla in the sense that it is a rackmount unit that connects to your PC. but it DOES have the xlr preamps built in already so you can just plug your mics in direct. thats the AARDVARK Q10

It doesn't come in a laptop version, though-- does it?
