Toms, tom toms, crash, snare.... damn it! to much crap! what to do what to do!?!?

Im starting to recored local bands in and around my area, but I'm having a big problem with the names of all the symbols, and drums in a drum kit. i saw this site:

www.kenbrashear.com/

kind of cool, it has all the drums and symbols (or are there more?), but i still dont know the names of all the drums and or symbols. so if somebody could help me out. it would help out when studio talk comes up. any help is good help!

thanks

mics? what kind of mics to use? kick drum mics, snare mics, room mics? what to use? i got 2 Shure SM57's 1 Shure SM58 and a Cad M37, but im looking at buying 2 Shure KSM44 for over head mics. for the kick drum i'm looking at an AKG D112. dont konw if more mics are needed, but would like some extras just in case. over head mics, what other mics are worth buying?

well i dont know ALL the names, but...

1. theres the kick drum or the bass drum. boom.
2. there's the snare. crack! this kit has two. snares have white heads.
3. theres floor tom, low tom, medium tom, high tom. bah-dum-dum. the floor tom sits on a stand by itself, the toms are usually placed above the kick in a semi-circle beneath the big cymbals. this kit has a floor tom and a medium and high.

then there's the cymbals:

1. you've got your ride cymbal. thats the one thats big and wide and flat, and usually hangs out closest to the snare drum (or do i mean near the floor tom? i forget), and often a bit lower than the other cymbals in a kit. in your picture here it's the double-cymbal near the right above the floor tom--all the way on the right. it makes kind of a 'ding' sound like a bell almost. my favorite!

2. the high hat is the sandwich-lookin' cymbal which you open or close with your foot. in this picture, it's between the two snares.

3. you may have several big crash cymbals placed up high--theyre almost always placed up above everything else, right above the toms. i see three here--starting on the right from the double ride, the next three, going left.

4. there may be a very tiny cymbal called a sizzle or splash. this kit has two. one is certainly a splash. it sounds almost exactly like someone's jumping into a pool.

5. another big flat kind of cymbal is called a china cymbal, i think. i havent seen too many of those but i think they're like a special kind of crash cymbal with a lot of sustain, and usually they have strange depressions in them. so i think that's what that big cymbal all the way on the left is.

6. a drummer might have a cowbell or a woodblock or a tambourine mounted somewhere.

that's all that comes to mind right now. does anyone know if those crash cymbals have special names?

woah, click on the mixer, bottom left of the pic. he's labeled them all for ya. click on 'hide key hints' to reveal the names. looks like i got the ride crossed with the china. this ride has little depressions in it and sits above the snare (like i thought it should) and the china is the strange double-cymbal on the right.

that drumkit would be a blast to play with my keyboard if there wasn't such a terrible latency from hitting the key to actually hearing the hit. it's a good 100-200 miliseconds.

BTW, you HAVE to click on his stool and read the hilarious story about his first drumkit!

errr... he has his kit setup kinda weird, usually the ride goes on the right side for a righty kit, and vice versa for lefty (above the floor tom).

The Cymbal labelled P in that picture is a china not a crash. Chinas look almost like a large, upside down crash and have a flat lip around the edge.

mics for drums...sm57 all around except the kick. ALmost every club I ever played in that has their own systems have all sm57's for drums...the kick drum mic varies.

And condensers (2 of the same) for overhead mics are ideal.

dan, the labelling indicates that cymbal P is a china.

Totally cool ... but I best not tell the kids about this link. I'll get up the next morning and find a pile of dust where the Dell kybd used to sit!
