I have no signal processor at all, I was tinking about buying one to make my sound better, but i dont know what to get. Maybe a cheap channel strip?

Oct 24, 2003 09:55 pm channel strip would be nice. or a compressor.
all i've got (besides a boxful for guitar pedals) is a compressor. next i might get one of those ART TPS pres. but since i have this Audio Buddy pre I might wait and get a nice parametric EQ first.
Oct 24, 2003 10:00 pm do you have any reccomendations for a cheap channel strip?
Oct 24, 2003 10:47 pm nope. i wouldn't recommend a cheap one. but i havn't used many either. like i said i'm looking at the that ART TPS. it's about $180 new. that's about as cheap as they get without getting into some REAL junk. The idea is you want to get something *better* sounding them the pres on your mixer.
Oct 24, 2003 11:05 pm Not cheap, like real cheap, like $200.

Oct 24, 2003 11:10 pm I'm afriad $200 is still cheap.
Up the anti to about $400 and you'll be in the market for some good equipment (focusrite, tla, dbX, etc)

Oct 25, 2003 06:58 am Idle curiousity, you never said WHAT you want to use the processor on...a specific instrument, a mixdown type multi-effects thing or what...
And $200 isn't bad...it's not cheap, it average...
Oct 25, 2003 09:46 am Hmmm... Looking at that makes me think it may end up being one of my next purchases... Actually, I would go for the 2-channel for $500, I believe. I need another compressor, so with one of those you're killing 2 birds with one stone. I'll need to get another Delta 44 first, though, so I can increase my recording power to 8 tracks and use it along with my TPS and mixer.

Oct 25, 2003 04:44 pm I was reading an article about stand alone compressors. The article basicly said, 'that one should patch the compressor through the mixers send and return';the article went on to say, 'by this you can make adjustments to the dynamic range, without altering the gain staging.
So, what I was wondering, how can you do this with all-in- one units? Thanks

Oct 25, 2003 08:54 pm In an "all in one unit" the signal is procesed in a chain.
First you have the preamp stage, this boosts your input signal up to the correct operating "temperature".
This signal will then be passed straight onto the next processor in the chain - eg: there may be compression built in. Once the compression stage was passed, the signal would be fed to the next processor (eg: an EQ processor) and so on until it reaches the output stage where the signal would either be sent to tape, or sent the the input of a mixing desk (infact, nearly all such units will have 2 outputs for performing this exact funtion).
When using an "all in one" processor described above, you do not have to worry about altering the mixer's gain staging as your initial input will not be going into the mixer at all, instead it will be fed to the input of the "all in one" unit.
Send and Return points on mixing desks are for use with dynamic processors, such as stand alone Compressors, EQ, etc, etc.

Oct 25, 2003 09:21 pm So, to boil it all down...using an all-in-one is just as good as a stand alone?

Oct 25, 2003 09:29 pm errrr
now you're confusing me.
By an "All-in-one" unit I presume you are refering to a channel strip - somethingl like a Focusrite TrackMaster or an ART TPS system, etc.
As for stand alone - do you mean a mixing desk with a compressor hooked up to the Insert point?

Oct 25, 2003 10:12 pm To tell you the truth...I'm not sure. I bought a Behringer VX2000. It's a preamp and has a compressor,gate,eq... I read that article and thought I made a mistake by not getting a preamp by itself. I don't know.....
Oct 25, 2003 10:31 pm It all depends on the stand alone and all-in-one you are comparing. They can be just as good, hell, they can be better...
