I want to distort my vocals but have them still understandable... what is commonly used on the vocals to kind of grunge em up?

Overdrive a plugin that has "saturation" properties.

The best one I can think of is "Blockfish" - a very nice little compressor which is avaliable at the ever cool www.digitalfishphones.com

no, i think he to means reeeaally distort them. like Asche or God Module does. It's a common theme in alot of hard industrial to overdrive the vocals until they almost sound inhuman.

I've had alot of luck just layering several overdrives and filters. Hit me up on AIM for an example... i think I showed you that "Jesus Gun" demo song. But all I did was overdrive the vocal track several times, made sure I gain staged it every step of the way to ensure I didn't clip digitally and then I scooped all the low end out of the result with a well placed HP filter. I think i ended up shaving some of the high end out too.

How about some Izotope Trash? You can download a demo at izotope.com. I've got the demo and it's pretty sweet. Looks kind of like Ozone except vintage :) I use guitar amp plug-in modelers to achieve that kind of distortion-- If I'm thinking of what you're thinking of.

I've had good results from simply pluging my mic into an old tube amp and cranking the tube but I don't think it's good for the amp. heh. But yeah Jamie knows what I mean. I want it to be clearly distorted, but not so much that it's not understandable... I guess like Ohgr would do or something

I've got Welt. Can you give me an example of a song with the sound you're looking for, I'll try and figure out what he's doing.

BTW, have you heard of Hocico? I've been trying to figure out their vocal sound for like a year now.

dude, Trillian is acting weird. It won't connect to MSN. I've tried closing and restarting and adusting settings and rebooting and nothing works. I'm thinking of just dropping Trillian and just running AIM and MSN independantly

Jamie- I was having similar problems so I just decided to run MSN and yahoo independantly, even though I don't use yahoo that often, aside from going into the chat rooms. Anyway, i'll catch you online when you get things settled.

i like running your output of your preamp/mixer/soundcard output through a guitar amp and/or distortion pedals, then mic'ing the speaker. just keep in mind the what settings the EQ knobs on your amp/stomp boxes are.
