i'm sure at least some of you have heard of the "new" CD protection that was unveiled this past week. here's the really ridiculous part:
SunnComm to sue 'Shift key' student for $10m
www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/33322.html
i'm sure again that many of you know that with windows operating systems, holding SHIFT while inserting the CD is one way of preventing the CD from automatically running, whether it be audio or data. this doctoral student pointed out that this new copy protection depends on that autorun function, and is therefore easily bypassed with the SHIFT key. i didn't know that pointing out the obvious could get you sued.
whether CDs need to be copy protected or whether internet file trading has a gigantic detrimental effect on music sales or not...blah blah blah. the point is, this kind of heavy-handed enforcement is really, really dumb.

Oct 10, 2003 02:55 pm Only if it works, they will NEVER win that lawsuit. That's the stupidest thing I have heard all day...
Oct 10, 2003 03:14 pm sounds like SunnComm made a bad business decision and they're trying to pawn it off on someone else. A innocent student at that. agreed, stupidest things i've heard today
Oct 10, 2003 03:25 pm actually, I take that back, this is the second stupidest thing I heard today...you shoulda been in the IRC channel I was in today ... sheesh ...

Oh no, you just heard they voted Ahhhhnuld the governor of California... :-D
Oct 11, 2003 01:49 pm there was no way arnold WOULDNT win. i totally expected that. i dont even think it's stupid. it just makes me jealous. that man never loses at ANYTHING. he's a champion in the true sense of the word. whatever he wills, occurs.
Oct 11, 2003 02:06 pm Yes, it is stupid, he barely has a grasp of the English language and has abosultely no political experience. I agree, he is quite the guy, I respect in so far as getting the job done that he sets out to do, that I agree with. But if he wants to enter the politcal arena he should start on city counsel, then Mayor, then move up the later. Starting at an office as high as Governor he is just gonna make himself look stupid...actually, that may not be true, he may very well do I good job, since his inlaws are the Kennedy's, but to me it's just sad because, though politcs has always been a popularity contest, this just shows it in full technicolor...
Oct 11, 2003 04:02 pm well, i think...
you may have a point. but on the other hand, who cares. i predict what will happen:
the state of california has just been annexed by schwarzeneggar's ego. it's now a subdivision of one of the biggest egos in the history of the world. if you know anything about arnie, you know that 'losing' is not an option for him. failure at his stated goals is inexcusable. consequently, i believe california is in very good hands. i think he'll do exactly what he set out to do: fix the economy. i'm not a republican, or even really a true fan of the man. but i do respect his relentless drive. awed by it, actually.
anything less than total success would be complete failure for arnold. he hates that. and he's never experienced it. if you don't believe me, just read his biography. the future of california is now hitched to, possibly, the exact right engine to haul it out of the muck. for whatever reason, he needs to be a champion at all things. he's dreamed of being a leader his whole life, and every dream he's ever had he has made come true. now he wants to fix the economy. i havent the slightest doubt that he will. whether or not its 'right' that he has the chance, novice that he is.
Oct 11, 2003 04:10 pm valid points all around forty.
It's just his lack of experience that may make him fail regardless of his valiant efforts due to the fact that he does not by any stretch of the imagination have total control over it, there are MANY cooks in the kitchen at his level of gov't.
I do agree with your assessment of his character, he has a drive that is stunning.

Oct 11, 2003 05:42 pm have you listened to arnold talk about what he wants to do with "kalifoanea"? i think the biggest point that people aren't talking about is that when you have someone with zero experience hitting an office like that, they depend heavily on those that surround them. so we'll just have to pray that arnold chooses decent people. in my mind, california's problems are unfixable without a much larger, nationwide thought shift.
i know that there are people here who support bush, but it scares me a lot to hear about arnold's meetings with karl rove about "afterschool programs" and the like.
Oct 11, 2003 06:33 pm db, i agree with you. the legislature is where stuff happens, and they're all going to have different ideas and agendas. it is possible he will fail, but it will be a first. should be interesting.
Oct 12, 2003 10:01 pm minkus.. i think you are just afraid of nazi children. lets get real.. if anyone here has ever "voted" in california he or she (and now you all) will know that if anyone decides the fate of the citizens of california it is the population. every major issue is voted on by the people of california, you have to know your govorn(ers/ments) plans. more like a true republic than any other state. thats why it is very easy going out there and very very populated. not over populated ..even tho dick cheeney and his big light switch make it look like they are ;) (brown outs anyone)
i think arnold will learn a hell of a lot about politics, which is his plan, and he will be guided along just like everyother new comer into the game. he was raised to hate alot of cultures and ideas, he has proven himself as a good person, and he wants to make people better themselves. post 9/11 tho.... i think someone will try to kill him.... well a few people probably, but what can you do?

Oct 13, 2003 02:14 am hey mkf. nah, i am not sure if i really buy the arnold-nazi connection at all. i think that is really stretching it. what scares me most about him is how "pro-business" he is, particularly where he is contemplating further deregulation of our energy system. it's also not cool that the people who are being chosen to advise him are the same people that got california into our mess in the first place.
i didn't like gray davis or his politics, but i see this recall as a type of right-wing coup. one of the main problems with california's system (happens to be the same in almost all other states and federally) is that politicians have to mount expensive election campaigns, which end up being funded by individuals and corporations who request favors in return that frequently are not in the interest of the people that these politicians are elected to represent. one of the reasons that i was initially hoping that peter camejo or arianna huffington would get elected was because of their priority on campaign finance reform. of course, it quickly became apparent that they weren't going to be mentioned in the media unless they (particularly arianna) would be cast in a light that would really identify them as fringe candidates. i couldn't count all the jokes that i heard based upon how arianna is a powerful woman. i don't remember laughing at any of them. i do remember frequently laughing at how much of a joke this whole recall has been. it doesn't really help to put voting power in the hands of a people whose minds are molded by clear channel stations.

Oct 13, 2003 03:22 pm someone mentioned ahhnold. it's not that big of a deal though. i think everyone is mellow about it.
Oct 13, 2003 03:28 pm that would be me...the ever present trouble maker...
Oct 13, 2003 03:48 pm the man is rich. maybe he can hire a real governor as a sort of advisor.
Oct 13, 2003 03:49 pm That's actually I really good idea.
