Just wanna show some pics

As some of you know, I have been doing a lot of home improvements around my house, and just built a new studio desk for myself. I just wanted to show some pics of some of the work.

The pic of my desk really doesn't do it justice, cuz it can't all fit on one pic, the racks on either side are actually angled toward me from the ends of the desk, it's really quite cool and comfortable.

Just proud of my work (or the work we hired out in the case of the entertainment center :-)

Got some cool landscaping pics I showed a while ago, maybe I will have to put those up too...it's been a busy couple years!

Sweet stuff db! I need to build a desk like that myself. I was going to buy one from Argossy, but I think I'll build it myself and spend the extra money on gear instead. Did you build the entertainment center? That looks like a serious project!

Thanks blue, no, the entertainment center I hired out, my neighbor own part of the company (the same dude that own the granite shop that I got the countertops from). The bill for the entertainment center felt like a kidney punch, as you know, the countertops were for me building the company a website so it only cost me time...no money :-)

From my pricing, a desk that has the same specs as mine (rack space, desk space, etc) from many manufacturers would be over $1000, I built that one for under $200...and I like the layout of mine better.

Sweet! Makes me get excited about building something. I've got this idea for a new rack that I'm working on in my head. Building it yourself is definately the way to go. Studio furniture is rediculously priced. You pay tons of money for nothing but some laminated particle board with wood trim a lot of the time, anyways. Better to go all natural :)

Yeah, the Argossy console I was going to buy was going to cost just a touch under $1000 and that was only going to hold my mixer and 11 spaces of rack gear. I would have to later add additional components to it to add more rack space at a substantial cost. I'm definitely going to build one myself. Maybe we should create some working drawings that people could download. I bet there's lots of folks around here that would be into that.

Jamie, also remember, mine is about 8 years old (probably more like 10), so they may have changed the chassis in that time.

Muffins, it's actually quite easy, you should be able to build one rack for about $70-$100 depending on the type of wood. My whole desk was about $200 but only because the desktop is made from left over countertop from the island in my kitchen from when the granite was put in...so it was free. The rack on the right, per my design is 11 rack spaces in the bottom part and I think 6 or 7 spaces on the top in the angled part where my mixer is sitting. The left one, rather than rack rails I just put a shelf in the middle and am using it for my reciever/surround decoder, cassette deck, amp and VCR. Those two, at the height I planned, make perfect speaker stands too.

Those of you that mentioned getting excited to build one, do it, it's really not that hard if you have a saw, a router (not totally necessary) a hand drill and some patience to stain and seal wood.

I had the added advantage of having 10 years (give or take) of experience being a machinist, but even without that, it's really pretty simple not that hard.

I have built a rack before out of stained plywood, which I use right now. It does the job, but I want to change some things about it. So that's why I've been thinking about making a new one, and now that you mention it, perhaps I should make 2, one with just shelves on the other end. Then I could use them for monitor stands as well and then have a bit more room on my desk. This time I'm going to seal it and make it more to "pro" standards :)

Well, now I have a 16 or 18 space rack made from plywood painted black and has casters that is beat to hell that someone can HAVE if they just come and get it...it's fallen off of trucks, been in and out of every bar in the area and has some of my band stickers on it, but if anyone wants, come and get it :-)

dB- How far back does that rack with the mixer on it go? Is there some sort of standard depth, or did you just build it to fit your UB? I was wondering what the angle on the slanted part was too. How is it held together? Nails or screws? Thanks.

The whole rack is 24" deep, made to fit my rack-mount computer case with a couple inches for cord ends and such so then don't get accidently broken by being kicked and stuff if people are behind it. The speaker shelf is 12" deep. The exact angle I am not sure, it was just the angle left over after all the other dimensions were layed out. It's held together with 2" drywall screws and wood glue. Never use nails, after moving and shifting nails work their way out, screws don't.

Ya, I like the desk. I got to see it up close and personal. Note the beer can just to the left of the moniter screen. (Linenkugal I believe) I wish I had desktop space like dB does though. I have only seen the entertainment center in pieces so I cant wait to get over there and see it whole. and I gotta say, that granite counter top is the koolset thing I have seen.

And yes, I am a gear whore. When I have an extra bit of time I will pop some pics up of the pigpen and you can see how nice dBs desk space is compared to my none desk space. For a writing desk, I just get out a CD case, and viola instant desk. :-)

Thanks for the specifics, dB. I used screws on my last one because I figured nails wouldn't do the job. Guess I was right.

Ya, its much cleaner then before, but there are getting to be a few piles around again now. Maybe I need a self motivational course on keeping my room clean. :-)

DB- I'll take that rack off your hands if you want to ship it... I'd pay for shipping and whatnot.

Shipping would be FAR more than it's worth. I was actually just gonna unscrew it, keep the casters and get rid of the wood in the garbage or something...it's too beat up for me to pawn off on anyone I know :-)

ah I see... well take it apart and use it for something else. heh. I want to build a rack in the near futre so that I don't have to use the peice of junk old computer rack I've got now. It's the kind where you have to sleide the little thingies over the holes but almost all of them are missing... I want a rack where you don't have to wory about that, just put the unit in and screw it on and you're set.
