Alright people.
I've been busy recording a local band in my little studio setup. The band's called stem, some of you may remember them, I worked on their previous EP a bit too.
This track's the lead track from their new EP and is called "Kar Ceys" (one toke too many possibly :) Let me know what you think about the production, mastering and, if you want, the song writing (but that had little to do with me.

Sep 16, 2003 09:32 pm that compression on the drums is pretty chewy. what did you use to track the drums?
Sep 17, 2003 02:24 am Still downloading but sounds good so far. Hey Jues I was wondering if you had time to master that segment of the track I sent you. I understand if you have been busy. I have tried mastering it myself with some better results but I would love to hear what you could do with it. I want to sell some copies at an event I'm going to the 27th. If you could just send me the presents that would be great. Again I understand if you don't have time.
Thanks

Sep 17, 2003 09:41 am Hey Otem
Yeah, sorry it took so long, here's a zip file containg the presets I used. I used Waves Q6, MaxxBass, RComp and UltraMaximiser+ (in that order) for the signal chain.
Hope you like the results.

Sep 17, 2003 09:45 am Hey, jues, how about you submit those to the preset sharing database in the HRC Pro section :-)

Sep 17, 2003 09:51 am That's an interesting song, and I like the overall sound a lot. The vocals are a little too in the front for me. The background music in the beginning, except for the cymbals and vocals, is a litle too quiet for me. When the guitar gets heavy I think the mix is great, wouldn't change a thing.
As far as the writing goes, the vocals as the beginning are a little monotonal and unchanging. I would add a different melody.
Overall I really like this piece, and the sound is excellent.

Sep 17, 2003 09:57 am Yeah, the mix and master sound excellent to me. I wouldn't change a thing personally. The song itself is kinda interesting.
Sep 17, 2003 07:54 pm what's an .xps file? i'd love to see how jues masters.

Sep 23, 2003 03:42 am Just gave the track a new listen, and I have to admit I'm really feeling this one. It's not what I normally listen to, but I'm really digging it. Good job on your part and feel free to pass along the praise to your boys stem.

Sep 23, 2003 02:37 pm Oh boy, I can't wait to hear this one... I have a feeling I'm going to be dumbfounded by the production...
Sep 23, 2003 03:45 pm Nice, Jues! Another pro sounding track :) I like it a lot. The compression is crazy on the drums. Nice artistic use of pumping (I guess you'd call it that...). Sounds like something I'd have to listen to a few times to really "get" the song, which is cool. Gotta love when the distortion comes in! That trademark "PHAT" sound... hehheh

Sep 23, 2003 08:04 pm It's interesting, the guitar on that track was all tracked via single SM58 :) My guitarist just bought a Sennheiser Guitar Cab Mic (I will get the model #, for £119 I can't reccomend it enough, it sounds awsome!).
Yeah, the compression on the "opening" drums is incedibly extreme, I opened 2 instances of "blockfish" and fed the singal through both of them in series - extreme maybe :)
