it's a good idea in principle. it would be extremely difficult to put into practice...the kind of thing that takes the entire waking lives of a very dedicated group of people and a shift in consciousness of artists themselves. it would be very difficult to attempt to erode power away from established corporate interests, but this idea's time will come.

el musico, do you know what the RIAA does? I mean, besides what you hear about in the news of the day regarding the internet?

Basically, the RIAA is run by corporate interests, which often leaves the Indie artist struggling to survive without the massive funding to promote themselves.

The AOIRA would be a collective group of Indies performing the same function as the RIAA, only protecting Indie interests instead of corporate interests!

I agree with Minkus, I think it is a great idea, I would love to play some role in it and would do what I could to back it should a workable plan be put in to place, I would not mind getting into further discussions of building that plan. But I do think it would be very difficult to do as well.

I would like to get some more insite into the idea from Waldo, as I generally like the way Waldo thinks and his knowledge of the industry. And the goal is certianly admirable...and necessary at some point with the internet bring more power to the indie artist and the project/home studio coming to be so common...almost the norm.

I've had these thoughts in the back of my mind for some time.

I think the place to start is to get feedback from those that would be members, and whom it would affect the most, and that would be most of you!

I've started a discussion forum at the same location:

www.therealwaldo.com/yabb...play;threadid=4

Let's keep it there for a bit so that it's centralized, and the idea can expand with the most feedback possible.

A few years ago, when my band was still together, my band and two others started an organization like this. It was for christian indies and we called it Proclaim. It was essentially an artist network and we reviewed venues and submitted them to a group database traded information constantly and did a couple organization shows... then about 5 months later everyone lost interest and it dissolved... with a yahoo group as the residue groups.yahoo.com/group/christianmusicohio/

...notice the last post was in june...

It was a good idea and it was created by the local heavy hitters... bands and band members who people sought out for advice anyway. but there has to be local desire first for there to be a national desire.

That sounds like more of a promotion organization, which is far from what the RIAA does.

The RIAA is more of a rights protection organization. I.e., it goes to battle for it's members in the courts, sets recording standards, etc..

Yes, the net is littered with organizations like that zeke, heck, HRC is somewhat that type of a thing, there is Taxi and places like that as well that are more targetted at that, it's just promotional. What is needed is protection for the artists the same way the RIAA protects "big music", and fat wallets at the labels. But without either major support (with money and time) from the indie scene both heavyweights and local yokals, I dunno how it could work because the indie scene doesn't have that kind of cash.

And the indie scene, is, by nature "indie", independent, you against the world. So what Minkus said earlier about changing mindsets is essential as well.

Feel free to copy/paste some of these views over to the thread at www.therealwaldo.com/yabb...play;threadid=4 I've got people from all over coming in to talk about this, as I'm quite serious about forming such an organization.

i was thinking of something like this before - sort of a union for recording artists. pay your dues, get all sorts of privledges. sort of put the power back into the hands of the artists. if enough people want it there's not much big corporations can do
