Using an outboard effects box w/a sound card

OK, now it's my turn for a "how do I do this" post :-)

Once I get up and running, I know the first thing that I"ll want to do will be to add some reverb and other effects to some of my tracks. Seeing as how I'm sans-mixer, how will I go about using a multi-effects box to add effects to the tracks in the same manner that you would use a software plugin?

Place it in-between your pre-amp and soundcard. After your compressor (generally) if you have one.

But wouldn't that limit me to only being able to apply the effects while I'm recording? I'd like to be able to go back and adjust the wet/dry mix of the effect on a track after it has been recorded.

Is this beyond my means at this point?

the only way that can be done is with computer plug-ins, which I would recommend using over effects boxes, anyways, for that very reason.

Oh well. I'm just looking for a way to do the reverbs/delays and such without overtaxing my CPU.

Thanks!

Well, there's usually an option in multitracking programs that allows you to apply an effect to a track so that it no longer uses up CPU power. The only problem is that you can't go back and change anything about the effect.

How about looping out of your application, back to the mixer, run it through a hardward reverb then back into the app :-)

I'll be using a Delta 44 for this...so I would assign the track in question to one of the card's outputs, run it through the effects unit, back into one of the card's inputs and direct that signal to one of the tracks in the software?

Thanks for the help, I'm just salivating waiting for the UPS man to arrive with my card :-)

Yeah, what soundcard are you running Tad? If it's a delta 44, you can run a signal out of outputs 3+4, into the FX unit and then into a mixer.

In theory you could just run the output of the FX unit back to the inptus of your Soundcard, but I think latency would be a bit of a problem here.

jues.
