I havent had my sound card installed yet and my preamp is still in the mail but does this sound ok to you guys ? Thanks.

P.S. I'm new, and This is the greatest site on the net. Besides sublime directory. lol

Hey, glad you like the forums

Your chain of Instrument -> Preamp -> Soundcard will work fine for bass and vocals, however, you may notice some problems with guitar.

First off, the sound of a guitar is shaped heavily by the amp and speaker that you are playing it through, removing this stage from the input chain is not a good idea and will often leave you with dull and listless guitar sounds (tho, good results can be attained with just "clean" guitar sounds).

To get the full tone avaliable from your guitar, you will either have to look into mic'ing up your guitar cab or invest in a POD or similar guitar amp modelling device (like the Behringer V-Amp).

BTW: which soundcard and preamp have you ordered?

I could go with Micing my amp, just have to keep the sound down most the time cause the baby. Ihave a little practice amp and also a marshal stack. The practice amp should do fine I would think.
The soundcard Is a delta 44 I went with after reading all the good reviews from the forums here. The preamp is a ART Tube MP StudioV3. I just went with cause of the price and, I liked the old look of the blue vu meter, lol. I hope it is a good one. I will probably end up having to upgrade my ram cause it is only 124.
Thanks alot

Yeah, you should be able to get good results from mic'ing the practice amp, altough you may find you marshall performs a lot better, even at lower volumes.

Make sure you use a good mic as well, which mics do you have avaliable to you? An SM-57 is about as industry standard as you can get for mic'ing guitars.

As for the Ram, yes, I reccomend AT LEAST 256mb if you are serious about doing some recording. (I run 512)

Yeah Thanks. I needed someone to let me know how my setup would work.
I am definatley going to upgrade the ram now. You know of anything good for the price. I dont know anything about shopping for ram, like what needs to be compatible , ect. I want power though, I plan on rebuilding the whole thing one piece at a time. Hopefully I aint doing it to "*** backwards" by starting with the soundcard then the ram. then mabey a pentium 4 ? New motherboard ? ahhh.

As for the mic, I just got an old one we used to use to mic the drums, its fallen apart a few times and the duct tape is wearing out. I have heard alot about the SM57. It sais in M.F. mag, that its bulletproof and has been used on presidential podiums for years and years. lol. Definatley a must have for the price!!

Right, I think it's safe to say that a new mic should be top of your list. An SM57, coupled with a good preamp will serve for your guitar and vocal recordings nicley, and given the price you can't really complain - I would pick one of these up right away.

As for RAM, well, it depends, what speed and make (if appicable) PC do you have? I presume it is a Pentium 2 / 3 - what speed (Mhz) does it run at? You will probably also need to upgrade the Hard Disc Drive depending on the amount of space you have.

As for buying RAM online, I'm afrad I can't help you there, because I live in the UK :D

Thanks Jues.
My HD is 20 GB.
It sais at the startup screen that its an intel celeron at 800 MHZ. It sais in profile its a Pentium 2. All this time I thought I had a pentium 3. The computer was built by a local guy that has his own little computer store. Everything in it was new and I only paid 300 for it so it was a good deal at the time almost 2 years ago.
As for the SM57, It's at the top of my list.

What do you think Jues ? About the RAM and what I listed above. Thanks

An 800Mhz Intel Pentium II Celeron is gonna have a hard time coping with intensive digital audio work - however, it should suffice for smaller projects (8-12 tracks, not too many plugins).

You will more than likley want to get another hard disk to install - aim to pick up a 20-60Gig drive. You can install this second drive alongside the one in there at the moment without any problems.

You didn't list how much RAM your system has, but I would reccomend upgrading it to at least 128Mb, that should help things along a bit.

If you were in the UK, I ahve a P4 1.7Ghz that I would be more than happy to sell to you. :D

sean bacastow, as i understand it you should okay with the POD because it's designed for "direct" applications like that. i'm sure nothing beats a mic'd cab, maybe people seem to get by with the POD.
