pool cleanup in cubase sx

hello jues and assorted cubase people...

can someone describe the pool cleanup function in cubase? i just want to be sure...

i believe that i have a lot of unused audio tracks floating around in the audio pool, and i see there's an auto-cleanup command. but i remember reading somewhere that you have to be careful. something about if you renamed any of your tracks, even ones that are in use could be deleted. or something. but what i read on this seemed vague.

usually when i record, i leave the track as the default name: "audio 1" or whatever it is. then after i've recorded something, i'll rename the track "chorusgtr4a" or something like that. so i'm wondering: if i hit the auto-pool-cleanup, will i lose those tracks? because cubase might still consider them to be "audio 1 (27)" or whatever it thinks of them as? what's the best way to keep my pool shallow in the future? i dread having to go through the pool manually. i might have really hurt myself and my disk space by putting off learning about this.

Hey forty, here's what I do at the end of a session (so about 15 mins ago then).

Press CTRL+P to bring up the pool window

Right click on the Trash Can icon and select "Empty Trash" from the menu. A new window will open - tell Cubase you wish to Delete the selected files.

This will now remove all the suplace audio takes you have previously deleted whilst retaining everything that is currently viewable from the arrange window.

ok man, thanks. i will start doing that from now on.

but what about my 10 or so projects that i have currently, for which i didn't do that? can i use pool cleanup or will this erase important stuff?

man,

i just tried a pool cleanup in cubase and something went wrong.

i used the procedure outlined here. i haven't been cleaning up as i go, so i decided to go back and clean out each of my 14 or so folders, deleting the 'deleted' files, the ones not being used in the arrangement window.

most of the folders contain just one project. but the one i started with had 5 or so different projects(i got lazy, have just been working on riffs the past few weeks, and just kept creating new project files inside one of the folders).

the first project file i tried to cleanup had a close twin, an earlier version. i went to the new version, (the one i'm working on) went into pool, and clicked 'empty trash.' then i went and opened the earlier twin. suddenly a screen came up: a list of missing files. about 15. i dont have that many tracks in the project, not even by half. many seemed to be old takes--they were numbered in sequence. i tried playing the project back, and it seems intact. it plays as it should. i think then i tried cleanup for this project. now, whenever i open either project, i get the files missing screen.

both projects seem to play just fine, but there seems to be no way to eliminate the files missing screen. looks like they'll always come up from now on--a minor hassle. i'm just interested in knowing what happened. i get nervous about emptying the trash, and something obviously went wacko here. i'd hate to make a more serious mistake in the future.

this ever happen to anyone?

forty

never, ever, under any cirumstance share project folders. Each project MUST reside in its own folder or this sort of thing will inevitably happen.

As for it complaining of "missing files" - you must have the audio sections somewhere in the arrange window or still present in the pool of that project - bring up the pool window (CTRL+P) and select "remove un-used media from pool" - that should sort it out.

ok, i will never do that again.

i will try 'remove unused media from pool' to get rid of the 'files missing' screen.

i still don't get what happened. i was under the impression that when i tell cubase to 'empty trash' within one of these projects, it empties all files (from the project folder) that are not currently being used in that project (i had that 'locked my keys in the car sensation right after doing the operation). wouldn't that mean that all my other projects which share this folder would have the totality of thier files erased? that didn't happen. i get the missing files screen, but the other projects, even the unrelated ones, still seem to have thier parts intact.

this must mean that cubase deletes only files not associated with .cpr files.

but that doesn't explain...the missing files screen.
