Basic MIDI question

This is going to sound stupid, but I guess that's because I don't use MIDI a lot alongside audio. Anyways, my question is how I can play back MIDI sound files on my computer without using my old soundblaster soundcard going through to my mixer and then to my Delta 44. Isn't there some sort of software that will allow this? It seems so basic, but MIDI is so crazy complicated. I've written a whole CD worth of music in MIDI, yet I don't even understand what it really is...

FruityLoops it totally MIDI based. Every sampler and VSTi uses MIDI to trigger notes. I like downloading MIDI files off the net and importing them into Fruity and assigning different VST instruemtns to the different parts.

I also figured out you can sorta "bounce" the MIDI output of the SoundBlaster to a new audio track in Cakewalk. I'm not positive, but I think you just solo the MDI tracks you want to hear, arm a new track and tell it to record what you hear and press record. The MIDI plays back and gets recorded as audio. The MIDI sounds on my SB Live are awesoem!

You need a soundcard with MIDI to the best of my knowlege and the deltas do not have that.

I'll have to let you guys here some of my midi stuff sometime. So don't I need a soft synth or something? How do I set that up to work? The only reason I really care about this right now is for using the midi metronome in SONAR. Normally I just record it onto an audio track through my sound blaster's line out, but that's kind of annoying and takes too long... especially when you find out you picked the wrong tempo for the 4th time...

That kinda falls under the "RTFM" category. Look in Sonars help menu or the manual, it explains it very well, that is how most of us learned to use 'em.

Well, I read all of it in the SONAR manual but I don't understand what I'm reading. I understand the first few lines and then it goes right over my head :-(
Is it possible to get a soft synth working so that it is just like my sound blaster, except the output goes through my delta 44? Are soft synths even programs or are they just plug ins? I want to be able to set it up and not worry about. This is really hard to explain.

Well, there is a toolbar option to "Insert DXi". That is all I ever do...

Hmmm...
Just as I suspected... Nobody REALLY understands the strange phenomenon known as MIDI ;-)

Thanks anyways. Maybe I should rephrase my question. Here it goes:

How do I get sound to come from the metronome in Sonar?

I'm pretty sure i rememer reading somwhere that it's just like Cakewalk Pro Audio v9. You can either set it up to play a MIDI note or thru the internal beep in the computer. It's in the options somewhere
