I'm looking at buying a 19" rackmount EQ for recording (vocals, minidisc, found-sound, everything) and possibly even as part of my bass and guitar rigs. I need to keep it cheap and functional. Couple Qs:
(1) Am I better off getting one channel that's really complex, or should I go with the versatility of two channels?
(2) Should I be looking at a graphic or a parametric? What are the advantages and limitations of each?
(3) What affordable brands can I trust?
thankums in advance -j

Jul 25, 2003 05:18 am Hey Jamie
Well - the whole point of getting an outboard EQ module (rather than using plugins) is the fact that you are gonna be warming up REAL valves (I personally wouldn't even bother with purchasing a solid state EQ - there's just no point when plugins do it much better).
1. Depends entirley on what you are likely to process, tho having said that, most EQ's are dual channel (linkable as a stereo pair)
2. Graphic is used in Live Situations, or "Room Tuning" when you need to create a specific curve to the audio - it's far too harsh and un-natural (in most cases) to consider using a graphic EQ during the tracking stage. You want a nice vale Para-metric EQ unit such as...
3. If you want a good EQ unit that will "warm up" your sound, then don't cut corners - I would reccomend the following:
o Furman PQ3B - www.musiciansfriend.com/s.../base_id/73177/ - This is a single channel EQ strip with 3 parametric bands - but you know it's gonna sound pretty lush...
o Aphex 109 EQ - www.musiciansfriend.com/s...l/base_id/73180 - This is the one I would reccomend you go for - dual channel with 4 bands in mono mode and 2 in stereo - high quality tubes throughout the input and output stage - this will cook your signals until they have a warm glow...
o Focusrite Red 2 - www.musiciansfriend.com/s...l/base_id/60712 - Buy me one while you're at it.
TLA also make an Excellent EQ unit which I have used at college - can't remember the name and MF don't carry their range - but I would definatly reccomend checking that one out as well.
jues.
Jul 25, 2003 12:05 pm Hey those are all pretty expensive units for me, even the Aphex 109 is going for $300, but there's a guy on eBay right now selling one for $150 "buy it now" + $21 S+H, sounds like a deal. I don't have the $ for it right now, but the 109 might be the one I'm looking for, thanks!

Jul 26, 2003 08:35 am Yeah, that seemed to be the best of the bunch on offeer there - but as I said, check out Ebay for the TLA unit.
