compressing live drums

Hi!

I need advice/opinions on whether it is necessary to apply compression on all mics for drums or snare drum alone is enough? I used to connect all 6 mics of my drumkit to an 8-ch console. I was thinking of adding a compressor/limiter/gate equipment to my setup which mostly come in 2 or 4 channels. It will eat up all those inputs for the drums alone if I will be applying compression on all mics. Any help/advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Compression on the snare will definatly assist you - it will make the signal far less suseptible to clipping. However, you may then also want to apply a stereo compressor to the entire drum mix to give it that punch it requires - but this is something that you may want to leave until mixdown.

jues.
