Hey Guys,

You might remember a while ago I posted an acoustic guitar track with a girl singing on it (it was simply called "jenny" then.) Then, A lot of work on that song later (with help from minkusmaz on bass guitar) we have the finished track.

"Get there First"

Your comments as always would be appreciated.

Hey Jues, not to be a brat, but I enjoyed the more acoustic version better. Of course I am biased toward the acoustic sounding things. I really enjoy the bass but the drums don't do it for me, especially the 'machine-gun' rolls. I also think her voice coulb be louder in the mix. Maybe you could have another acoustic guitar strumming for rythm instead of drums? The mix is otherwise really good to me. Just my two cents.

its cool man...its like a slightly calmer female flipcycle!

i like the drums, though on the headphones i listened on they sounded slightly intrusive...might be my gear though. theres some cool little breaks on there though.

ove the bits where the vox are multitracked, top sound to it, very slick.

the strings are cool, as is the acoustic sound, nice reverby sound to the guitar bits

another top one dude, love it!

I prefered the original but this one if you tone down the drums a bit is pretty nice. The drums aside from the snare really boom and almost wipe out the guitar and vocals.

This mix the drums are stealing the focal point of the song which I considered to be the vocals and the guitar work. Bring those back to the front and I think you've got a winner. I really like the song.

Yeah man, that's exactly what I did - I deemed that the drums were FAR too high in the mix.

Here's a list of the changes I made

o Dropped the drum mix

o Lowered the level of the hithat and altered the sound to make it slightly less piercing.

o Re-EQ'd the Guitar part to make it cut through more.

o Altered the vocal Reverb to give it a smoother feel.

o Raised the volume of the piano melody in the verse (it was _very_ burried before!)

Let me know how things sound now - I think I'm nearly there on this one...

Wow! Very slick. I didn't listen to the original mix, but the updated one is very professional. I can't think of a single suggestion to make. Good work!

Much better :) It's still just a tad boomy on the chorus and example spot is like 1:22 or so into the song. Might just be my system though, maybe you shouldn't mess with that anymore <g>.
Not sure I care for the machine gun snare or whatever it is though, what about a cymbal swell instead, kinda like your intro only with a cymbal?

Anyhow if you do nothing more to it sounds great, I think you've got a real winner there.

I like it! And I like the machine guns too :-) I really like the drum sound. The song could go either way-- like it is now, or acoustic like before. I was a little worried it wouldn't sound right with any other instruments, but I was wrong. You did it just right.

By the way, I'm back from a 2 week vacation, so you will hear more from me now :-)

Overall, I think the track sounds REALLY good. A notch above a lot of things I see posted on various forums. A few suggestions:

I like the drum programming, but I would consider swapping out some of the sounds if you're using MIDI and samples. If it's loops, then I wouldn't worry about it. For me, if the drums are going to be programmed instead of live, I'd rather they just "fess up" and be electronic instead of immitating "live" drums. The snare could come down a bit in the mix, and I find the left-panned hi-hat a bit distracting. Having said all that, the rhythms are RIGHT ON.... I even like the "machine gun snare."

The girl has a good voice... what mic/pre did you use?

Dammit Jues... if you didn't live so far away my band would totally be doing our next CD with you... feel like making a trip to Harrisburg, PA?

Thanks for the compliment IDQ :)

I recorded her via my Rode NT-1 and my Joe Meek MQ3 preamp. I did a fairly big scoop at 1Khz to give it that "pop" female vocal feel (all light and airy).

As for the drums, well, they were actually live :D We recorded the drums in my garage (hence the massive kit sound) using a Single Mic (the NT-1 again!) I was really impressed with that. It was then cut up and arranged in SX.

Jonny - pay for my flight and I'd be more than happy to come for a week or two, I could do with a holiday :D

Jues-- What did you do to get the stereo acoustic sound? It sounds really nice. Also, what kind of EQ boosting/cutting did you do on the acoustic. It sounds very warm :-)

The acoustic (in this case, a 12 string) was mic'd in my bathroom using my Rode NT-1. I then did the usual double tracking routine (panning 65% in either direction) and then fed this stereo signal through a nice compressor.

As for the EQ I simply scooped out the Mid (around 1kz ish) to allow room for the rest of the track, there is a slight boost at aroudn 2.6Khz for presence to make it cut through in places.

There is also a bit of "chamber" reverb on that signal - that helps to fill it out as well.

Most interesting approach Mr. Jues! Cutting and reassembling a drum track is something that would have escaped me! Very "dreamy" feel and very pleasing all around sound by the way! Very sweet work! For my taste "some" of the percussion is still a little over the top. I would listen to it five thousand times and choose accent hits. Obviously, I am reflecting my love for jazz, so just as obviously my opinion and a buck get a cup of coffee. The percussion is very nice work. For some reason I just have it in my head that less would be more "volume" by forcing the listener to work a little to enjoy the percussion.

You think the drums on my track sound "modern and cool" - ok, well check out the drum programming on this little bad-boy by an artist called "bola"

(btw: this is no doubt against some ruling, so it's only a short clip, and it will be gone soon....)

This song has the most amazing production and drum programing that I have ever heard. It's by an american duo called "Televon Tel Aviv" and the Track is called "Sound in a Dark Room" - I seriously do reccomend that you guys check them out - awesome stuff!
