I believe it is an effect that makes an instrument sound like a voice.

Quote:
from the glossary: vocoder - I device that accepts a vocal signal and instrument signal and combines the two to create a mechanical sound voice in tune with the instrument.

I might add that it works by examining the spectral features of the input signal and applying that same EQ "curve" to the generated signal. For instance, with vocoded vocals (it doesn't have to be vocals, but this is the most common), it's important to understand that the consonant sounds we hear when someone speaks is simply the mouth moving to filter and resonate certain frequencies. By examining these changes in "eq" and applying them to a synthesizer for example, we can make the synth "talk". It's nothing more than a very complex automated equalizer. Just like your mouth! :O)

I remember an R&B band that did a song 5 or 10 years ago that used one. I think the song was "I wanna be your man" They used it in their chorus and sang normaly (fairly) on the verses.
If you remember the old show "Battlestar Galactica" the robot bad guy dudes the "Cyborgs" spoke through an effect that might have been some sort of primitive vocoder. But that's pretty much what one sounds like.

Of ourse, Jamie that definition is really hitting it with the simple stick, but it gets the point across, it's a glossary, not an electronics specs manual ;-)

yeah, so the artist who sang "I wanna be your man" is actually the same guy who sang the chorus in California Love. His name is Roger Troutman of Roger and Zapp fame. Another hit among many is "Computer love". He sang all his songs in that manner, with the vocoder feel.

Soundwave was the coolest decepticon by far, with the voice, and the tapes that he could deploy...

i was always a fan of the Dinobots, the maverick good guys who Optimus could barely keep under control and had to keep locked up in cages until things really started to hit the fan.

Yeah, I still have an original Grimlock toy from back in the day. Me Grimlock, smash. It's too bad kids these days can't experience cartoons like we had. Cartoons these days aren't nearly the quality that they used to be.

Swoop has to be my all-rime favorite Transformers toy. I barely rememer the show since I was only like 5 circa 1985, but I clearly remember spending hours "flying" Swoop around the house as a kid. And you gotta love any toy with a spring loaded missile laucher!
