Midi Keyboard & Sonar Problem

Hi all.. Im pretty new to all this..so here goes..

I have a evolution mk-149 keyboard and i use a dmx6 fire and Sonar. I have this setup on 2 different machines. for some reason on my new machine when i plug the keyboard in (using standard midi lead into the dmx6fire midi in on breakout box)i cant play my softsynths.. if i use the mouse i can play and hear them ok.. but if i press the keyboard keys it seems to change patches,scroll through settings.. but it dosent play the instrument.. im confused as i seem to have no difference in settings from my other machine (wich works fine).. sooo,, it seems to me that midi information is getting through.. just it seems to be controller information...can anyone please tell me why i cant actually play the softsynths using my keyboard?

as an additional note..ive just noticed that my midi input/output activity monitor (in sys tray in sonar) is flashing continually (midi in).. whereas on my other machine it only flashes when i depress a key... i am using the same keyboard and leads etc on both machines..
