at2035 and at2050

hey guys i'm brand new to home recording. i've got a tascam dp32sd multi track recorder a mackie profx 22 that came with traction 4.0 software.a bunch of sm 57's a beta 58 from my days as a touring drummer..any way i want to get an at 2035 and an at 2050 but are they the same mic with the 2050 being multi pattern the only difference

Hey man, welcome to HRC.

From what I am reading it looks like you are right, they are in the same family of mics, but the 2050 has a switchable pattern (pretty cool!). Outside of that, they appear to be pretty darn similar in frequency range, cutoffs, pads and the like.

That being said, that switchable pattern seems to add a good chunk to the price tag, if you don't need that feature, might not be worth breaking the bank for.

I am not mic guru at all, just not picky, personally, but I could see merit in the switchable pattern for somebody pickier...as far as having similar characteristics, I could easily see a time or two when you would want that similar tone/sound...in capturing stereo sounds or something, switch the 2050 to the same pattern as the 2035 you'd have a nice "matched set" (more or less) for tasks like that...

For example, mic a single source (be it voice, amp or whatever), have one right on the source and one back in the corner of the room to catch the wash or the reflections...same tone mic, different areas of the room, could be super cool.
