New ears

I'm all excited and had to share. Some time ago we went to a Presonus StudioLive mixer giving us individual ipad control over monitor mixes. Just received my first set of in-ears. Went with Westone 3x, top of my budget. We are already getting amazing live mixes and now I can't wait to get tracks with no monitor influence. The final decision for us was listening to a play back through the mains and then switching off the monitors. Night and day in clarity.

That is super cool, the last band I was in, we were talking about trying in-ears...looks so convenient...but then you don't have those big monitor wedges to put your foot up on to look cool and rock the hell out!

Much like putting a smaller guitar cab behind a more impressive looking speaker "screen", you could just leave the monitor wedges there for show, and still look cool. xD

Sounds great guys. I just hope I can adjust. It will be very different at first, I'm sure.

And the first time out was a total disaster. We bought some cheep "personal amps" for the buds. Mono only and I had to fidget with the plug to get both sides go the buds to come on. If I bumped the cord it fell out. Bass sounded like it was coming through blown speakers. Boom surrounded with buzz. My bass strap kept snagging the cord and yanking the things out of my ears. To make an adjustment on the board some 10 foot away, was akin to changing wardrobes. Drummer and keyboard thought they were great. The guitar player looked like a Charley Brown Christmas tree. Feedback was like having my head stuck in a police siren. The rehearsal was about as much fun as a root canal. So I dropped another 300 on a body pack. That will be here tomorrow. It seamed like a good idea at the time.

Here's the final resolve. After a great deal of experimentation and frustration, I finally got the ears working. Tried every foam tip provided and finally got short and wide ones to seal and align properly. No seal, no bass. Improper alignment in the ear, no treble. Then, every time a woman would wiggle her butt on the dance floor, and I would smile (it's autonomic) the seal would break. In the end a good sure body pack and non foam tips, short and wide and I'm getting a sound that is absolutely amazing. Never had the luxury of this kind of sound on stage before. By the same token, I had no idea how sloppy we were at times. No delays or room echoes to hide things now. And I can watch the wiggles! Life is good.
