Line In & Mic Recording Issue

Hello,

My name is Chaz, this is my first 1st and I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

My problem is that I cannot disable/prevent my computer or Adobe Audition 5.5 from recording through the Line In.

Example, Track 1 is an imported instrumental beat. Track 2 is my vocal track. When I have Track 2 armed I can see that my mic is working and picking up levels, but it also picks up any audio playing on my pc as well. As you can see this would be problematic for many reasons.

As stated above I am using Adobe Audition 5.5 on Windows XP, I am running my mic through an external Stanton Mixer. My sound card is Realtek HD Audio.

I think the problem may lay withing Realtek as I only have the option for Mic/Line 1and not a separate Mic 1 and Line , but any suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Yeah, recording off the realtek chip going in through the mic/line in is part of the problem.

I don't know if the realtek chips are based on the creative/soundblaster stuff? Creative cards/chips have a setting called "What U Hear" and I think that often ends up being the culprit in these cases. I think it was in the soundcard's own audio mixer panel somewhere, but I don't know if it's the same for a realtek chip. It's been awhile, so I don't remember exactly. It's either in the audio mixer, or in the control panel/sound section. Er, you might not be able to disable it, but there might be a fader you can slide all the way down or mute. That way, the playback won't get recorded along with the source you're trying to record (vocals in your case)

Of course one thing to make your life easier would be to get a simple cheap-ish 1 or 2 channel audio interface like a cheap M-Audio fasttrack, or a line6 UX1 or focusrite scarlett 2i2 or something. (plus you'd have better DACs when it comes down to rendering the wave/mp3 file in the DAW)

But yeah, first off disable the "what U hear" stuff, and see if that helps. If it's even there. If there isn't something like that, then we'll have to think of something else.

Edit: In the case of the Realtek HD audio manager (which now that I think of it, is probably similar to my laptop's view) there might be a setting called "stereo mix" that needs to be disabled.

I agree with J-Bot, sounds like a problem within the card. Realtek's are very low end Creative knockoffs, not really the best option for recording, while being just fine for music playback, DVD playback, etc...

The realtek may not have the "record what you hear" option J-Bot mentioned, if it does, try it, if not, I'd suggest you'd be well served buying even a modest USB audio interface that is made more for recording and disabling that realtek chip when recording. You'll probably work around this issue, and get the benefit of a lot lower latency (presumably).

Well gentlemen, I've been in the HS game for quite some time. And if there is one thing I know it's this. I can mess around with this crappy Realtek card all day/night and possible solve the problem to have ok at best quality.

(Btw the mixer doesn't have the what you hear but it does have the Stereo Mix function which did have a slight effect on solving the problem but I feel like there is some sort of audio paradox occurring on my machine)

Or I can just use Guitar Centers 10% price match and get this:
www.musiciansfriend.com/p...ecording-studio

Here: www.guitarcenter.com/Lexi...849-i1126259.gc

For about $5 bucks less than MF. Hmmm.... Waste my day with technical issues or take a 30 min drive and pick up a sweet new USB Audio Interface.

I think i'll just get that device and get to work. Thanks for the help!
I greatly appreciate the rapid response!

Quick forewarning on the lexicon stuff, they have a little bit of a history of having reports of reliability problems. That may have been specifically the lamda units though, I can't remember. The alpha and omega units might be fine.

Granted that was a couple years ago, so maybe they've improved since then. But for $60 it's not a bank breaker for sure, and it will probably suit your needs just fine.
