hi all. I'm a newbie so forgive any mistakes please, as I'm new to the recording game. My question is - Could someone please tell me whats the best way to connect a yamaha PSR 550 keyboard to the TASCAM dp 008 Portastudio please? The names of all the cables please would be appreciated also, as, as I say, Im a novice at this type of thing. Thanks in advance. Elagred.

What I would do is run a couple TRS cables from the L and R outputs on the back of the Yamaha into Input A and B on the portastudio. TRS = Tip Ring Sleeve.

They look kinda like this: <>=|===|=== (basically your typical stereo cable)

or better yet,

This will take up both of your inputs on that portastudio, but will let you record the stereo output from the keyboard into a stereo track. You will probably have to menu-dive to find a setting to set one of the tracks to a stereo track.

If you really need that other input on the portastudio, then what you can is record a mono output from the keyboard (one of the jacks should be L/R Mono, or just L+R) so you can run a TRS cable from that into one of the inputs (A or B on the portastudio) and record the keyboard to a mono track.

The 3-prong inputs on the portastudio are your typical mic input, which is called XLR, so you have a hot, cold, and ground cable in the wire. So you'd use one of those to connect up a mic, such as an SM57, or other dynamic mic. It looks like it also supplies phantom power, so with option turned on you could record something like a condenser mic.

Probably more info than you needed, but I hope it helps.

Looks like the piano has a headphone jack that you can connect to a 1/4" line in on the portastudio. You would just need a standard stereo audio cable (not sure if it's 1/8" or 1/4" out of the piano - wouldn't be surprised if it's 1/8" - 1/8" is the size that you use for a standard mp3 player).

If you want to record in stereo, you need to do the following:
piano -> 1/8" to 1/4" stereo converter -> 1/4" stereo cable -> stereo to 2 mono 1/4" converter -> put the 2 mono inputs into the 2 1/4" line inputs on the portastudio.

If you don't want to record in stereo, you can forget the stereo to mono converter and just go straight to one of the 1/4" line inputs.

Hope that helps.
