Acid Pro recording problem - HELP!

Hi, I have this week installed Acid pro on a new computer for my home studio.
I spent hours of anguish and frustration trying to get it to work properly yesterday!
All I want to do, is lay down ONE vocal track over existing audio. (One Wav, recorded elsewhere.)
The problem is this: No matter what I do, the vocal track plays back slightly quicker, and goes out of time after a few bars. I've made sure the beatmapper is off, and am recording as 'one-shot'. And yet it STILL does it. A one shot should simply play back in the same timing it is recorded.. shouldn't it??! I am going crazy! Any help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks, Cat.

How is you card performing in the app as far as latency and buffering goes? WHat type of driver are you using? What's the card? I am suspecting it's an ill performing bit o' hardware or the driver of it.

If you haven't perhaps install ASIO4ALL...it's a hit or miss solution for typical consumer type audio cards (Sound Blasters and other more gaming targeted cards), but when it does work, it works awesome.

Thanks for your reply dB Masters. Its the only one on two forums! Yeah, it's a soundblaster card. But there is no latency, and buffering is very minimal. I'll try this ASIO4ALL, worth a 'blast'! Many thanks. (I'm not sure on the current driver btw. I assume it's what originally came with the sounblaster card.)

I assume by "no latency" you mean no audible latency...as even the best audio cards have a few milliseconds latency, and sound blasters definitely will, it's just the software can compensate for it...I am not familiar with the most recent versions of Acid, haven't used it in a few years, but most applications have an audio hardware control panel that profiles your sound card and will report what the latency is.

Higher end SoundBlasters have gotten better over the years, but even the best ones typically are not made for recording, however, for your relatively simple needs it should be able to work just fine. ASIO4ALL should work well for you.

It's funny, I bought the soundblaster card (years ago) because I thought it WAS intended for music recording. (Bah!) I since gave that computer away, but now have it back, and have boosted the memory and other bits especially to use it for recording.

I've installed Asio4all now, but there is no place in the config menu to select it on acid pro 3,4, or 5..! I've tried other recording software too, even something as simple as Audacity. But no joy.

I there something I've missed? Any further help would be most appreciated. If hadn't shaved my head I'd pull my hair out right now.

There is also a soundcard built into the motherboard should I rip the soundblaster out and try it that way?

While I can't say with 100% certainty, I would suggest your SB card is likely better than the chip on your mobo, but, it might be worth a try, the ASIO4ALL may work with it...

What model SB do you have? They do promote it as "full duplex" (sound going in and out) but that basically means it can be used for phone calls, or internet gaming with one stream going in and one stream going out...which is basically what you seem to be doing...so it should work.

Have you tried Reaper? It's a great shareware app, and I have used ASIO4ALL myself within it a couple times...it doesn't generally show as "ASIO4ALL" but more just as ASIO 1/2, ASIO 3/4, etc...it just shows as ASIO driven options for each in and out of your sound card.

Generally speaking built in chips are the cheapest of the cheap, but, I have seen ASIO4ALL bring those cheapies to perform decently for limited use...so like I said, might be worth a try.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to HRC and enjoy the ride :-)

Cheers DB, in the mean time since my last post.. I ripped out the soundblaster, and just plugged into the MB card. And.. FIXED!

Without using ASIO either. And record quality is not discernible from with the soundblaster. SWEEEEEEEEET!

Many thanks for your help, I would not have considered the hardware issue. I was assuming a fault on Acid Pro installation or something.

Thanks again!

Cat.
