No biggy on the stock ear phones that come with it, they are great but not very comfortable, and they let in too much outside crap. Its good ya got the proper charger though, I looked for one for a spare, and they only come from Sony, at about $35.00 US that is more then the charger for my dang cell phone! Glad your liking it though. collect up them samples my firend, and use them well. And speaking of samples, your drum loop is pretty much done, I just gotta take a minute and encode it down to mp3 and shoot it back to ya. We should hook up over MSN and Ill just pop it to ya as the wave file, then its all good. Or better yet ICQ, they move files faster then MSN does. How many hours differance is it there. I will be up late Friday night so maybe we can do it then, or early Sat morn for me. let me know.

that's great! looks like that model has "plug-in power" which is super handy when you your on foot and can't drag your mixer along.

I can really recommend the Sony ECM-T6 electret condensor mic for portable recording. It's a tiny little watch battery powered clip-on mic that is super sensitive, especially when coupled with plug-in power. it's small enough to conceal in your palm or pocket and outputs as a mono 1/8", perfect for portable MD sound sniping. i have two. i paid $20 for one brand new at Circuit City a few years ago, and another one I just got off eBay like 3 months ago for less than $20. I don't think they make them anymore so grab one (or two) while you still can.

And if anyone shows you how to hack your MD, be careful, it's not hard to screw something up.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Don't go thru metal detectors with MDs on you. It seems to ruin the data on them :O(

Hey fellas,
I couldn't take it anymore and bought the same exact rig this morning off Ebay with a boatload of extra gear for $80.00!!! I've wanted one forever and had to have it. I looked it up on Circuit City's site and they wanted like $250.00 w/ shipping so I think I got a pretty good deal. Mine is coming with 4 blank Sony gold's, Radio shack power supply, rechargeable battery, ipod earbuds, and an adapter for a car cassette deck.

Flame, did you get the washboard zips? Did they work?

Jamie, I looked for those mics you recomended but found none. Is there a comparable mic that you know of?

yeah got the washboard bits uhuh...thanks very much for those...top! db's working on putting together a samples cd to distribute through the forum, so if you've got any you'd be willing to let him use (or even the ones you sent me) then im sure he'd appreciate it!

i'll have a loo for one of those mics jamie, sounds top. at the moment im using a standard pc desktop mic and im actually really chffed with the results...i only plugged it in to see how it fared and to learn how to use the minidisc, but it sounds really good considering.

whats would i hack my minidisc for? what would it do?

did ya ever get that sample cd i sent ya dude, or did customs steal it? if not, im starting to collect loads of other bits now, so i'll be able to send ya some samples for your collection. got some good violin ones, and ive just got back from recording a piano part which turned out pretty good too!

Flame,
So glad the washboard bits worked for ya. Feel free to pass them on to dB for his collection if you think they are appropriate. I've never done anything like that before so I don't know if they are or not.
I can't wait to get my Sony, though. I'll be a sound collectin' fool too!!!!!

I might have to get one of those things one of these days...the world is so full of cool sounds...I wish Geoff would have had one in Iraq...can you imagine what some of THOSE samples coupel have been like? Planes taking off, distant (or maybe close?) explosions, tower chatter...oh, cool, cool stuff!

No doubt,
My wife works on Aberdeen Proving Ground and they are always testing new artillery. I'm already trying to figure out how to get some of that!
My first adventure will be a true junk yard drum kit for a song I just started writing. I really want to try to do some things I've never done before. Loops and such. I also want to try to do some nasty distorted vocals for it too. I've never attempted anything like this before so I don't know what may come out of it but I'm excited about tryin'!!

bigfan, there's fifteen on ebay right now:

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...;category=41465
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...;category=41465
three dutch auctions with 5 units each all under $20 which i think is a great deal on such a wonderfully small and portable yet clear sounding mic. i don't know of anything quite like it, and i've tried many similar mics, including other electret condensors (like this joke i bought fom radio shack that takes one AAA battery, what a rip off). Grab one, or two, they are my primary portable mics for MD and the rawk. I use two at a time with a homemade adapted that makes the two of them into a stereo 1/8". Oh and don't get arrested trying to sample artillery fire. that would suck.

flame, about hacking, i can't find that link, but what it is is that some similar MDs models will all have the exact same computer inside, just different setting in that computer for that particualr model, and you can "hack" the computer by entering the setup mode and activating certain features. on some MDs you can toggle the headphone out into a line level out, you can adjust recording volume levels and other tricks. but it voids the warrenty and I've heard some real horror stories about people ruining thier MDs and having to pay for repairs. i've never tried it, i'm afraid to.

bigfan, that's cool that you want to make some noise or something industrial sounding. that's sucha blast because there's no boundried to what you can can't do. But then you'd already shown that rules are meant to be broke. i've never heard a banjo fit so well into a rock song.

dB, samples of radio chatter is one of my goals.. i'm still not sure how i'm going to do it.

Jamie,
Thanks, man! Why couldn't I find them earlier?? I'm stoopid! Anyways, I spoke to a friend of mine earlier who has used one and swears by it also. I guess I'm gonna get 2 of them and rig up the adapter like you said. i can't wait to start playin' with it. My buddy just recorded an old horse race ticket printer and put together a loop of it, threw some bass drum on it and it sounds really good! Freaked me out.
Speakin' of sounds, he also showed up at my place with a Slo-Bud Maverick pedal steel that he picked up at a music store with case, instructional books, and a couple packs of strings for $350.00. Its cool 'cause I wanted it and told him to stop by and pass some info to a buddy for me and the IMPULSIVE SHOPPER reared its ugly head again!!!!!! HEE-HEE!! We have no idea how to play it but we got one!
They won't let me record artillery but sometimes the booms down there are so loud they shake the house and I'm between 15 and 20 miles from the place.

oh, i forgot to mention these are OMNI directional mics. i use them specifically because they pick up sound from everywhere. if you don;t want that feature then these aren't the mics for you.

i should take a picture of this adapter i made, its made of one of those round plastic egg things you get toys in from the machines up front at the super market. i drilled four holes in the softer polypropylene lid and scrwed some 1/8" and RCA plugs into that and soldered them up. The polystyrene bauble has broke twch forcing my to go and buy a "homie" and a little rubber lizard for replacement parts. save yourself some trouble and buy the real thing, two female mono 1/8" to male stereo 1/8"

the only problem ive had so far is that the 1/8inch to 1/8inch jack lead ive got makes really weird noises unless you hold the jack half in and half out of both of the sockets...eg from whatever youre recording to the minidisc. its just that lead though - it must have funny plugs on or something...

you think it's the cable? replace it.

i bought a stereo RCA to stereo 1/8" adapter from Circuit City awhile back and tat thing was junk, only the right channel came thru clear, the left on was all staticy and junk, and the RCA jacks were so flimsy they wouldn't stay seated on whatever female RCA jack i attached them to. i found some nice long heavy duty ones at a local electronics shop.
