Hey guys. I'm new to vocal editing, but would like some advice. I have a great mic and software and I will be singing with my brother's music he makes on FL studio. He makes a lot of electronic sounding stuff, so I want my vocals to match. One vocal effect I really like is from this song:
I'm not sure how they got that effect. Every time I ask people, they say, "reverb," but any reverb I've done sounds like an echo and not electronic-ish like this. Can anyone break this down for me? Thanks!

Oct 04, 2011 09:51 pm It sounds like delays and a bit of Auto-tune here and there. I assume when you mean "electronic-ish" you're referring to what sounds like someone massaging the vocal with Auto-tune. It's a fairly common trick (or is it gimmick?) in rap music.

Oct 04, 2011 10:16 pm Yep, it's vocal tuning artifacts. I use and like Autotune a lot. If you go that route, use a fast retune speed and play around with the tracking knob.
The cool thing about autotune is that it can sound like a robot easily enough, but as you use it more you'll learn how to make a vocal sound totally on key when it totally wasn't...at all. Love the stuff. Makes recording vocals a snap. I've only worked with two really competent vocalists so far in my brief non-career as a recordist, and even they got a little touch up. There are some purists out there that frown on it. Whatever. If I can't tell, they can't tell. It's WAY easier than making the singer try to do everything on pitch with the same energy if ONE note was a cent off or something. People just don't have time to be excellent vocalists in my world. Autotune to the rescue.

Oct 05, 2011 11:45 pm You're right about not going through the hassle, Quincysan, if a vocal performance is real close. I recorded a friend's vocals at his house recently; his daughter, a musician in the high school band, asked me pointedly, "You guys aren't going to use that tuning thing on you're voices, right?" No, I told her. We (I) have never used it, but I can see why someone might want to use it. It's funny that the kid was aware of it, and felt it important that her dad not use it---a young purist.
