questions on solid gear

i sort of addressed this in the topic asking about whether the phonics board was good or not, but please allow me to be more specific. i'm looking to get some solid gear so that i can make some GOOD recordings of my band, even beyond the awe-inspiring power of my behringer MX802A.

i was looking at spending somewhere around $2000 on gear. the setup that i currently have in mind is a mackie 1642VLZ-PRO into an echo layla system. i've already got (3) SM57s and (1) Beta 52, so i'd probably go for one or two solid condenser mics (i currently have an MK319) and perhaps some tom mics unless the 57s would work well.

the $2000 mark is a LOOSE ceiling. seriously, any and all input on this would be very much appreciated. i'm looking forward to taking tons of time trying to milk out the best sounds i can for some badass jams. thanks!

$2000 will hook you up! a better board, a bigger soundcard, maybe one of those 4 channel compressors. compressor compressor compressor. that's fun to say. my favorite new piece of gear.

i've got almost the same thing you've got. Same mixer, two sm57's and an mk319 on the way, Delta 44 soundcard. unless you you plan to record the whole band at once, you might not need much more.

yeah i want to do full on one or two nice condenser mics for room mics plus gated mics on each drum. get some serious clarity!

what i've found is every time i think I've got the hook up on gear something else catches my eye , i love my rack gear and happy with every peice , but i keep getting more equipment . One thing i do when i shop around is if possible play around with the gear at the store , check the price ( not that big of a deal) and ask around . when i first got into recording I looked at what certain band, producers, web site admin :P ect.. were useing and what type of sound they got and by all of that , that is how i made my final buys. Sometimes just because a peice of gear is cheap in price doesn't always mean it's crap , but other times you get what you pay for . Check out some of the member gear on there profile and listen to some of the tunes they've posted . Shop around , you can get some good stuff for 2g's .
