I did a mix for a band called The Anxiety Effect, what do you guys think? I like the song a lot, is there any criticism you guys can come up with? I got to use the Metal Foundry expansion for Superior on this one, I REALLY like it. The kick especially.

Not much into this kind of music, but the mix sounds pretty good.

Yeah, it's not really my genre either, but I will say the mix is good. The vocals come through good and clear. I think the bass drum could use a little more oomph, and maybe the low end in general for this type of music. Not a huge boost or anything, but I think the low end could be brought out just a smidge more. That's probably more flavor than anything else though. :)

I think the mix has a good sound, and is pretty balanced overall.

Yeah I guess it could use some more rumble. In one of my earlier mixes I thought it was too muddy so I cut some low end on the guitars and i always dip the bass the same frequency I boost on the kick. So the kick is the punctuating boom and not a constant whuuhhhhuhh. Just personal taste I guess.

Thanks for the feedback! I also mastered it, something I used to think was as easy as putting a limiter on it and calling it a day. So I've focused more on getting a great sounding mix then coming back to it with fresh ears and trying to get it to sound big and good. How's the mastering?

Well, I'm not a mastering guy, but I'd say, without hearing the original mix pre-mastering, you can't really comment on the master itself. All I can say is that everything as it is on the soundcloud, sounds good to me.

Well I've been told on previous masters that it sounds too smashed and distorted. So if you have nothing bad to say, I guess I succeeded :)

sounds pretty cool man.
IMO the drums needs to be a smidge louder, the vox need to come down. Its appears to me the vox have the edge the drums need on em.

You got any verb on the kit man? and i know what you mean about the kick, theyre touchy little fuggers, what are your comprssion settings?

I usually bus my drums this way:

Kick,Snare,Toms: compression (something with a semi-fast attack for the punch) and verb (long decay, subtle mix)

Overheads/Room: a tad of compression to keep it sweeping and washy, no verb

Then I bus both of those busses to a "Drums" bus and put a limiter on it. I've been using waves L2. It gives the drums more body and uumph.

I was thinking that the vocals were a bit hot. But the guy who tracked it is the vocalist and in a previous mix he wanted less guitar and more vox. So its just minor tweaks until its right i guess.

I can always count on you for metal advice dematrix. You know your heavy music.

jUst had another quick listen.
yeah those drums are pretty far back to me anyway. couldnt say if it needs more close mic interaction or just the whole lot turned up, but kinda judgin from where im sittin the snare and kick sound alot more likem theyre coming from the Oh's or ambient mics.
Ya know when ya cant quite get yer head around the kick and the snare as far as upfront is concerened? like it just not quite there enuff? that to me be either the instrument mic themselves not there enuff, or maybe even the ambient close mics could come up.
thats the thing with Ezd there are so many mic to choose from, it takes some time to figure out what does what in small doses.

one thing i have been mucking around with lately that works good is....if yer interested that is.... lets say i run everything outta superior drummers window and out as separate tracks to cubase. I use Superior's compression and all that in its mixer, and then i bus it all to a group, minus the OH's and then put a final compression on it there too, just a smidge to keep it all together. I still have oh comp in superior but just dont send it to the group channel in cubase.

its kinda like a pre master to the master at the end. i do it with all instruments guitars/bass...drums...vocals....so theyre all kinda under a separate control, alot, before i get to my version of a master anyway. hahaha, yeah, not that its mastering but it makes it presentable at least.

I always send the SD channels to cubase tracks. I prefer the cubase mixer and my own plugins to the SD ones. I'll send the kick mics to a channel called kick, etc. Then I mix and bus within cubase. The things I do use within SD are the transient and the comp on the kick and the bottom snares. And I usually find the toms have too much rumble but I don't wanna just cut the low freq's so I use the "fade" slider until the hits don't bleed into each other as much.

I agree, theres so much flexibility in SD, it's hard to get a handle on it!
