im aware of how it usually works, but i am thinking about having a microphone in my control room going into a monitor in the studio so i can communicate with the musicians. i want to save all my channels on my mixer for instruments and playback so i was wondering if a mic straight into a speaker would work fine. or is there something i can buy that'll do this??

Jul 26, 2011 10:56 pm Just don't point the mic at the speaker or put it near the speaker if it's directly plugged in, else you might get some nasty feedback. (made that mistake once with my keyboard amp as I wasn't paying attention.....'twas painful loud)
Jul 26, 2011 11:07 pm hahaha, yeah i used to do it all the time when in bands, the place would be going off and i'd be jumping around and accidently putting the mic in fold back. yeeeeoooww! (shakes head, wonders why he has tinnitus)
Jul 26, 2011 11:12 pm It would need an amp in between the speaker and the mic. The amp could be in speaker (active/powered) or a separate amp in front. There would have to be power somewhere in the chain though.

Jul 30, 2011 05:03 am yep thats what gave me the idea, because my 2 rokits are into my mixer via xlr cords, so i was thinking if i get another smaller one (like a rokit 5), hang it on the studio wall, then have a mic going into the control room
i just tried plugging my shure sm57 directly into one of my rokit 8's and got nothing? why would this be?

Jul 31, 2011 01:09 am you need a preamp for the mic first to get the very weak signal from the mic up to line level, which is what the input of the monitor needs......i used to plug my active bass directly into my monitor when i was ampless.
