alrighty, i'm just about to build my first studio out the back of the house to practise recording friends and family and hopefully build a proper size one in town later on for a career.

i have planned to have a 2 by 2 meter vocal room and then the guitars and bass can either be recorded in the main studio where the drums are, or in the control room.

was just thinking though, is it fine to have the drums in a large room (say 5 meters by 5 meters) or do they need to have their own room, just big enough for a drum kit?

I like to use one big space for every part of the recording process. The bigger the better for drums, most definitely. I've worked with and without vocal booths...and I can see a vocal booth having a practical application for some rap and screamer type metal, but for singing I think a nice big room is best. You can always use a dynamic mic like an Sm7b to get dry vocal sound and complement that with a ribbon or condenser to pick up the vocal+the room and blend to taste. If it were me, I wouldn't build walls...I'd knock 'em down!

Also, check out MM's guide on room acoustics. Definitely a good thing to read up on. I think it's more geared for the control room setup, but the ideas should be applicable to any general rectangular room, and treating the space appropriately.

Big = Nice.

Avoid squares -- If you're actually making a vocal booth (which almost always sound terrible anyway unless they're really done right), do whatever you can to keep "square" out of the picture.

Lemme see if this old link works: www.massivemastering.com/...lVocalBooth.pdf

(EDIT) Yep, still there. This would help in avoiding a square in the 5mx5m room also.
