Won't be in the studio for a couple of days so I can't really give any good advice, I was only listening on crappy ear buds... however I was straining to hear the vox... might need to bump them up a bit... again.. I'm not monitoring with anything decent

Ha ha, I had to check and double check the title.
I'll give this a spin later when I'm at home.

ps... I challenge anyone here to a mixing contest.... I'm just kidding... maybe (ninja).

I feel sorry for Bif after hearing this... definitely will triumph. I have mixed emotions on the mix though. The one side of me says... ******* awesome!!! And then another side says... guitars need to come up. But then I fear if you do that, you'll drown out bass and vox. So perhaps... drums need to come down a decibel and then BAM!!! I dunno.. I guess cause I listen to too much death metal, I'm used to "in your face" guitars. I also don't think this song is Blues category either!! LOL!!!

I was thinking the guitars need to sit better too, F-18bro, and I can see how we'd want the vocals louder, I'll pump those up. I'm just so familiar with the lyrics the vocals seem more defined than they are; you're right BH.

I'm having to work out of the chicken coop (yes, chicken coop) where I'm recording a instrumental hip hop group because all my gear is all set up and we can't seem to get more than a couple hours of tracking done at a time...not convenient to move my studio every day so my studio lives in a house for chickens at the moment. So I'm going over there at 9 while the hip hop group is busy to work on this song. Gotta get it done in time to be put into a music video on Friday. Which I need free mastering on because I'm broke and work without a budget. Any-buddy handy with an MBC? I'm thinkin at you, Crux. Coolo? Anybody? Can't afford MM right now, even ITB budget.

I am not being paid for this, the music video director isn't being paid for it, and the band we're doing this for has broken up since we recorded/filmed...it's at times like these I wonder "Why am I doing this?" but then I remember that I'm an idiot; things make sense again, and I push forward. hahaha

I could probably do a bit of mastering for you if you like. I will be in the studio Wednesday if you want to set me up with a WAV of your mix and a WAV of your reference track(s)

ha ha, I challenge everyone to a mixing contest and get a request for mastering... ha ha.

Anyways, regarding the mix, there is a lot going on in there! It is hard to mention each instrument part... there are so many. So, this is hard for me to explain what I'm hearing... but there seems to be a big ball in the mids. And the lows and to a lesser extent the highs are not as well pronounced. Obviously it's because there are so many parts competing in the mids. I'm not sure what specific suggestions I could give you, but I can say I would like to hear the vocals a bit more pronounced also. Maybe the bass also. But yeah, I don't envy you trying to mix this one... so much stuff.

And I would totally give a whirl on the master, but I'm not sure I will have time before friday. Plus this is not the genre I'm most familiar with so I expect it would take a little longer than usual. Actually I would be interested to try it, but I don't want to commit to a promise I can't keep and tell you I could get it done for you before friday...

So the changes I made to the mix from what's posted in my profile were:

~2dBfs down on master drum bus and drum parallel comp bus
0.8 up on lead vocals
took down levels on keyboards and effects by a db or two.

I've sent copies of this out to BH, quickxkid, and a local friend who's handy with a MBC. Looks like BH is going to be able to take care of me in time to meet this deadline, so no rush from anyone else...but it would be kind of neat to hear a few different approaches to the song.

We're using Jimmy Eat World - Big Casino (from Chase this Light) as the reference track. Please let me know if you're interested in giving this a go to see how your mastering skills sound next to others. I'm certainly curious...

I can get you my song and the Jimmy Eat World song.

Yes, I'm curious too. Please send to me. I might be able to work on it friday afternoon or over the weekend.

You have your squish knobs turned too far down... you obviously don't know how to use your tools.

Here's the video, kid needed it done today for a school project. I was sort of hoping for a bit more oddity in it...there was a pot bellied pig running around the video shoot for jeebus sake, and not one image of the crazed squealing oinker in the final. I'm betting WMG pulls this video down sooner or later, since the lead singer is still under contract and we just DIY'd and uploaded. It's a well documented party + a song, thaz it. See if I were a DIY music video director, it would be something my grandma wouldn't be proud of. Good thing I don't do that.

Still excited to hear more masters. I'm making some mix changes this weekend per BH's request. +0.5dbFS vocals, -1.5dbFS keys/effects. Let me know if you want that one instead of the one I sent previously, Coolo.

If anyone else...say from Schaumberg Illinois perhaps...wants to take part in this mastering comparison, let me know. Cheap advertising, eh? I'm really interested in comparing all the wav's.

When everyone has their masters in I'm going to zip it and upload to a filehost for anyone to download. Mastering is so dang mysterious! I need side-by-side examples, maybe others are the same.

I put it there on purpose, whether that was a good decision, up to the listener I guess.

I felt like the tune had a movement that reminded me of trains, and especially the keyboard part at the beginning reminded me of the bells that ring when you're waiting for the train crossing boundaries to drop. So that was a sample of a train passing, later on there's train brakes, and wheels pumping. Like I said...it was a conscious decision, maybe not a good one, but eh...I felt the arrangement could use a little something to make it more interesting.

Should have had the music video guy coordinate this visually, might have made it more apparent.

The next band I'm recording includes the songwriter for this song, so we're re-doing it with new guitar arrangements.

Sorry Quincy, already did my master on it before I saw you had made some adjustments. It's not exactly where I would want it, but it's the best I could do given my time constraints. The mp3 for listening is available on my music page here called Challenge Accepted.

Quincy, do you want me to send you the .wav?

Any opinions good or bad are welcome. It's a learning experience for me.

Edit: I think the train sound fits in just fine. Though there is a jet plane sounding sample that seemed just a tad loud to me later in the song, but not that big of a deal.

Jet plane eh? I agree, it was too much, but I went nuts on that sound and wanted to use it. It's actually a combination of a Harley, a lawnmower, and a tape slowdown effect. Sounds really cool cranked up...but not very appropriate at all. I asked the music video guy to use that for a scene of the pot bellied party pig dashing across the room to match the stereo panning...but no such luck, lol. Oh well, hah, guess that shot wasn't there.

Yes please on the Wav. When I get all the masters I'm going to publish them all in a zipped archive on some file host for anyone who's interested to download.

I haven't made any changes yet, but I will tonight when I go this evenings recording session.
