The Echo Mia Output Jacks

Hey Db,
You know how you told me that on my Echo MIA card the right and left outs were for the right and left signal? Well, I was at a music store today and the guy there told me that both signals would come through one out. And he showed me on the stores computer (which had a MIA)

I was just wondering if you knew something that this guy didn`t.

Or maybe I just heard him wrong....

Ummmm, well, they will both come out of one out, that I believe. Then ask the guy if the signals keep their stereo image, ask him to pan a sound back and forth between speakers. If it does, I will be quite shocked.

Keep in mind I also said that I have never used the MIA, so I might be wrong, I was just assuming it was like every other card on the planet.

I believe the MIA is a digital/analog card. Which means you have both digital and analog output's and input's. The salesman was probably showing you the digital out's, which is hard to believe as he would still need to convert them to and\ audio signal somewhere. The analog output's will alway's be a stereo pair, meaning 2 output's. Unless you are using a SB card or the like, then it will be an 1/8" singal jack that must be split into a stereo pair. So dB is right and the salesman is wrong in telling you that you only need one output to get stereo.

So yes, both left and right can come out the digital output, which is a singal RCA/SPDIF jack, and the anaolg must use 2 1/4" jack's for a discrete left and right signal.

good point Noize, it coulda been the digital jack, which would be a good move on the salesguys part to help make the sale, but not necessarily a very good example of real-world use for the common home recording situation...

I don't think those 1/4 inch jacks on the MIA are stereo jacks, but I might be wrong...it's happened once or twice ;-)

Ya I guess I should state it has 2 channel's of analog in and out, which mean's there are 2 jack's out which can be panned hard left and hard right.

I did check the web site and there is no singal stereo out analog jack. So I would ask the sales guy to prove it.

Whew, a week without the net will make you go about crazy.

yeah, the MIA does have the digital out which is the RCA jack.

I guess the only thing I need to know is how to make it work...

Well, just so you are aware of this. The digital output is for going direct to another digital device. As far as I know there are no amp's out there that will except a digital input and convert it to analog.

The digital out's are for going to thing's like a DAT deck, or to a CD recorder/burner, or some effect's processor's now have digital input's.

Now that digital out can be used to sync with other computers with Steinebrgs new VST Networking invention...which is another groovy new use for it if you use Steinberg apps.

Sorry I`m taking so long to reply. We just moved to a new house (a freakin nightmare) and I just now got the internet back.
I guess I have one more question here. I just bought the Behringer Powerplay Headphone Amp. It has both 1/4 and XLR main ins. (Both left and right)

If the MIA uses 1/2 out as a left/right signal, will I need to buy the cable that DB suggested (single-jack In with a two-jack Out) not sure what thats called...then run that into the headphone amp?
The amp also came with left and right outs, so I guess that I could go straight to the monitors from there. Is that safe to assume?

Thanks for all your help,
Mitch

No, you won't need thta type of cable. You will just use one cable from the channel 1 out and one cable from the channel 2 out of the MIA. I believe the MIA has 1/4" out's so use those input's on the headphone amp.
