Would love your opinion on guitar definition and saxophone levels on a song in my profile: "Song A" by "Band B" (also, anything else you want to critique...but vox are scratch and the mix isn't finished)
Thanks!

Mar 09, 2011 04:59 pm Thanks! I don't really go for anything in particular as far as genre is concerned. Just what feels appropriate for the piece of music. Sometimes I fail miserably, sometimes I kind of get it close. I was thinking more along the lines of "wall of sound" than lofi. There's something like 9 guitar tracks smashed in there and their panning is kind of all over the place. I need to get those positions solidified and maybe EQ the guitar master bus, saxophone, and vocals, to sit more clearly next to one another. I want it to feel organic, but these are the BEST drums I've ever recorded and I want to let them shine. I can't really hear them as much as I'd like in this mix :-(

Mar 10, 2011 02:44 am 9 guitar tracks? Damn man!
I won't lie it does sound kind of muddy. Also sounds like everything is setting too far back... maybe cut the reverb on a couple of the guitars, and drums? The sax.... are you compressing it? It sounds maybe to me you could ease off the compression, if you are indeed compressing it. Also I might give it a boost in the high mids/low highs to give it a little more squawky feel.. I think it might help it push through the mix a bit. I don't know, these are just ideas off the top of my head. And I can't tell for sure, but I get the impression that these drums do sound pretty nice. I like the sound of the snare for sure!
Oh, listening on my good headphones.
Sounds like a fun song though!

Mar 10, 2011 02:54 pm Dang straight on the muddiness. I hear it too. I think I'm starting to get this critter under control...the drums are the only instrument with reverb on 'em currently.
That sax isn't compressed at all, but I did put the player a few feet from the mic to get a natural sort of compression. I think it needs a little reverb and a level boost will help too. I'm thinking EQ notching will save the day.
Thanks!
