Hello my friends. I have came to the result of my first mix. This is one of my bands favourite song I everything was home recorded except for the drums that we recorded in a studio. The recording and mixing of this song is the result of many hours of work and learning. Learning from you guys that helped me all this way. So many of you may listen to this knowing that you are somehow part of it. Thanx a lot and I am anxious to have some feedback!

Hello Bruno,

Nice Heavy tune! I think the drums are good. The bass gtr sounds sort of distorted in places. Intentional?

The problem I find is the guitar sound. It sounds really thin to me. In a heavy tune like this I think the guitar should really sucker punch ya! Give it some mids... more meat and a little less shrill.

The vocals kind of have a Type O Negative vibe to them!

Cool tune!

had a listen. like the drums at the start - cool little loop and opening phrase...the tune for the first few bars sounds almost exactly like a tune of jues's ive got somewhere! guitar does sound a little thin, do as shredfit says and that'll help, or doubletracking the guitar part could help. noticed the distorted bass noise too - didnt think it was to bad though (through the lofi stream at least). vocal sounds a bit like kurt cobain in places - so congratulations on that i guess! again, double tracking the vocal would perhaps help no end.

cool stuff though, nice one!

i dig the tune a lot,especially the surf/neo punk
guitar bit,but there are major problems with the mix.
the first problem i hear is that you are not practicing good eq techniques.you will get a much better mix if you subtract eq rather than add it.
adding eq adds boost, which in turn adds noise and gives each track less head room.it can also cause distotion and an over all hiss.never try to make up in eq what you miss in tracking.
it sound to my ears as if each track is sharing the same freq.range, which makes for poor stereo seperation.are you using good nearfields?if not,get some!!!!!
sorry if this comes off the wrong way.im just trying to be helpful, as others have to me.
great tune,poor mix.

Ill expand a bit on growlinclarences post. As he said, it sounds as if there was a bit of EQ added to all the tracks before mixdown, if you still have the tracks get them to a flattened sound and start from there. It also sounds as thought the instruments are all panned pretty much dead center. Try seperating them a bit, and then cutting EQ on each track, start with the drums, they have a lot of high end on them. Then as shredfit advised, try cutting some of the high end off the guitar track and just touch up the mid a bit. The lead parts stand out nicely, but again are all centered, these could be panned off to one side or the other just a bit. And i must ask, did the bass get any compression? If not try compressing with a pluggin to give it some punch and help it cut through a bit. The vocals sounded good and would probably comeout a bit when the other tracks are touched up a bit.

Otherwise, I really liked the track and agree with the Type O Negative remark, you have a good soudn going just a bit of tweaking now and youll be all set.

as soon as I get my Win Xp problem solved I will fix things up and update a new version. I was suspicious that I could have used too much boosts in eq. I will try to cut some off. Any tips on what to cut in which instrument besides mids for guitar? Which mid frequencies should I boost to guive guitars more weight and presence?

Thank you all again. Your suggestions are gold for me.

guitar: id definitely double up the guitar tracks.. pan them left and right but not hard either direction. cut the highs back a lil, raise the mids and lows a bit. the tone of the lead guitar part is close to where it should be.

bass: the distorted bass sound is cool. the sound that kicks in around :50 is very cool. id try doubling it up with another track using the sound that is used for the verse.

the drums, specifically the cymbals and hi-hats could definitely use the high end being pulled down some.

vox: i think these will clean themselves up a fair bit when the rest is tweaked a lil.

the song itself and its changes/writing are very cool. i dug it. id love to hear it when its tweaked a bit. its got a lot of potential.

I have already done some of the suggested changes and now the song sounds much more clearer.
-Let me explain you that there are two different guitars that play the same thing sometimes in the song. So, when they are playing the same thing is as if it was a double guitar and they are panned 80% to each side. Do you still find a problem there?

-About the drums high ends...is it annoying? Cause there is really a lot of EQ boost there, but I like the sound cause I have used a lot of compression there.

-I should be uploading the new version as soon as possible, when I do I will let you know.

Thanks a lot again.

a world of improvement man. definitely a move in the right direction.

did you touch the vocals any? or did they clear up on their own? cause they do sound better now.

im curious as to what would happen if you pulled the overall volume up and run it through a sonic maximizer.. such as the the ultra maximizer lv. 1 from the waves pack.. do you have wavelab or another mastering program?

if you dont have access to the maximizer, i could do that for you and post the link. ill give this another listen when i get back from work tonight and give you some more feedback

I didnt touch the vocals if I can remember. The only big changes were removing some of the boost that I have done to the overheads high end and bring up a few mids in guitars. I like the guitars better now but I have a feeling that the drums were left behind a bit, do you agree to that or do you like the drums where they are now?
Some more feedback would be just fine.

PS:The voice is really better balanced now, I hadnt realized that.
