MXL 991's are seriously awesome drum overheads

Better in my opinion than the Audix FP7 series overhead mics and Superlux PRO series SDC's I've tried.

For a tight, produced sound, I think close mic'd drums with MXL 991's in an XY or AB config for cymbals/OH's are great. The meat of the drum sound comes from the sum of the individual mics vs any particular room mic. The balance and dynamics I'm getting from the MXL 991's on cymbals are awesome! Especially considering the 991 is not even an item you can buy by itself; one of these 'buy one get one' deals. I had to buy a 990 just to get the 991. I've heard that the 991 is just a 990 in another housing, so perhaps you could use the 990 in a weird looking kind of XY with the 991 and get the same results. Either way, it's a $50 mic that kicks the pants off the more expensive mics I've tried. I love that sort of product :)
