Using Guitar Rig 4

Hey guys, this is my first post :] and i have a quick question.
I just purchased Guitar Rig 4 and i tried to record some tracks but every time i add more than one guitar track i start getting clipping and really bad lag. Now, i use to be able to record songs that sometimes had 10+ guitar tracks without a problem and now i can't even record 2 :/ I'm using cakewalk's Home studio and i also have M-audios Fast track interface that i use to plug the guitar in and i'm saving everything to an external hard drive (two terabytes). Well i think that's it. How do i stop it from lagging so much? Thanks!
Love this forum btw :D

Hmmm, maybe you're not using ASIO as the interface driver?

Maybe you're not un-arming the first track when tracking the second?

Maybe what's playing out from track 1 is getting recorded to track 2, causing a bit of a circle-j**k.

Open up your performance monitor and see what your processor is doing, maybe it's taxed out. I'm guessing that your previous projects with 10 tracks weren't with GR4 running. With GR4, I'm assuming that the bare track is only the clean signal, but GR4 does the processing on top of it, along with on top of your other new track, so the PC has to do a lot of processing to keep up.

What are your PC specs?

Hey thanks for the response. I understand what you mean by the clean signal, that makes a lot of sense as to why it would lag. I'm using an old gaming laptop to record and I guess it can't handle GR4. Is there any possible way to upgrade my computer so it can run everything, or am i better off just saving up and buying a new desktop?

Here are my Pc specs (don't really know what to put)

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU
Memory: 2038MB RAM

Thanks, Chris.

You can always Freeze each track as you finish it to save on CPU/Resources. Also in GR4 you can turn off the HI quality setting while tracking it really doesn't sound much different and uses about 1/2 the CPU, then turn it back on when you bounce your mix down.

What Dan said is probably your best bet. Freeze the tracks. Also, depending on what patch you are using in GR4 it can be HUGE. Your laptop sounds like it is bare minimum. Also, check your latest service pack.
