What Is A Good Interface For Recording In My Home Studio?

I am setting up a home studio and am not sure of a good interface to use between my instruments and my computer. I will be getting a new home desktop PC just for the studio at a later date and am not worried about that yet. I want a nice interface that can help me by remembering setting of all types for the tracks I work on, etc. To tell you the truth I don't know what I need that's why I'm here.

I have looked at the M-Audio ProjectMix I/O with it's motorized faders (love that) and the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R USB with it's built in effects and I really don't know what's out there, so I come here humbly for your help :) Suggestions?

The current music gear I have that has interfacing potential:
Yamaha KX8 Midi Controller
Fender Cyber Twin SE Guitar Amp
Boss GT-10B Bass Processor
Roland V-Drums TD-9

I will probably be using Cubase.

I am not a fan of Cubase, myself, but choose what you want, most hardware will work with anything, with the one big exception being ProTools...

How many ins and outs do you need? Does the interface need preamps or do you have preamps? Do you really need all the faders and such or will you do most of your mixing via the software after recording?

I don't own any separate or stand-alone preamps. My GT-10B has built in preamps as well as my Cyber Twin SE. Not sure on my ins and outs yet. I don't have a mixer yet but from what I understand if I get the M-Audio ProjectMix I/O I wont need one. I would like to be able to mix on the fly with the use of real faders (not completely necessary but would like that) but will probably do most mixing in post. These are the things I'm looking at and I'm sure most hardware will work but I'm looking for specifics and preferred recommendations, as well as things I haven't considered. I'm more of a musician than an engineer.

I love my projectmix! And also, Pro Tools is native in its newest version (9)...so you can use it with any interface now. It is pricey though, at $600. Sweetwater has this really strange package deal where you get an mbox and PT 9 for $450...so you might as well do that and get a free mobile recording interface for on the go in addition to the Projectmix. If the PT/PMix path is the one you take.

One thing to be aware of, you won't have all the headroom you need for drums, so you might want to buy some -10db inline pads for your snare, kick, and tom mics. Link below:

Have a listen to the two songs in my profile if you're seriously considering the Pmix + ProTools option, I did those recordings with that combo. I didn't have inline pads for my drums, and there's a lot of other stuff I do differently now...but for the price of the pmix I think the quality is a bargain.

You're right, those motorized faders are an awesome tool when it's time to mix.

Oh, and I paid $700 for my Pmix used, so shop around. No need to pay full price on those things.

The Presonus Firestudio might offer you what you need plus give you another DAW to check out (Studio One Artist ) with an upgrade available to the pro version. I just got it myself and Studio One looks great. And if you don't need all those inputs there are other interfaces by them for less.

I don't care for Pro Tools but thanks for the info on that... I also am thinking I really don't want to have to do the extra purchase of a soundcard that would hopefully work well with a rack unit... the MA-PM has all of that covered internally which could only help make things smoother. I'm not seeing much that compares to it... it's really interesting how many control surfaces have been discontinued... all of Tascams have been and even the MA-PM can't be found in stores very often. There are plenty of rack mounts but I think I going like having the real faders to work with... nothings for sure yet though... still looking and listening, keep the comments coming! :)
