Hi guys,

dl.dropbox.com/u/1309497/Nr%202.mp3

Could U plz check out this short, 30-second sample and point out what can I improve in my mixing?

I'm a total rookie, still kinda proud of this clip made with my humble skills :)

The main problem is I feel like it lacks 'air'... Everything sounds like it's in the front and quickly becomes bit tiring to listen to (for me).

yeah it is a bit "2D" sounding....play with reverbs and delays to tuck things back in the mix (hint it can make drums sound bigger)...if you were to play that on a club PA kickin 100db of it, it'd definately would be uncomfortable...paning can help with this aswell...not just tracks but the reverbs themselves....crank up the mix nice n loud for a bit and you can tuck things back easier.

use a stereo reverb on a mono track and vice versa to start.

i dig the reggae feel....is the piano all the same velocity? i'm not hearin' alotta dynamics (volume).

good news is you have everything nice n hot (listening on a laptop).

yer on the right track as to your intuition on what to do...now jus figure out how to do it (engineers solve problems).

cheers mate

Thx for the feedback! Suddenly I've got this strange feeling like leaving my job right now and try some more mixing according to Your ideas... :D

Piano isn't all the same velocity, but I guess it's another problem with my mixing that it sounds like it is...

Will post the new version when it's ready.

hi!
I think bass is too loud here!
or not enough drums...

Sounds like its going in the right direction to me there was a point when the additional instrumentation kicked in, that the drums took a back seat in the mix.

I liked it myself, I don't think the bass is too loud globally, but it seems like a couple of notes ring out louder than they should, may want to compress that bass a bit to keep it in check...overall I dig it.

could you say by words how it must sound?)
Now we have drums that are deep and narrow in the mix. Is that right for you? maybe drums needs less reverb.
then guitar is too bright, I think. IMO, just down it by 3-5 db approximately or use high shelf

The overall impression should be of cabaret, for it's a track that will be playing in the background with singing live.

Drums -> I'm using Superior Drummer 2.0 and my problem is there's no 'one instrument - one mic' setting like i.e. in Toontrack's EZ Drummer... That is I've got three mics getting kick, two getting snare and so on... Which one should be reverbed and which left as it is? I've had lots of trouble achieving what can be heard now, but I'm open for any tips that could make it sound better. So what exactly sounds bad?

High shelf for guitar u say? Will try, will see..

Thanks for ur time LabFriend! :)
