It d-esses. :-P

it removes the ringing "s" that some singers and microphones pick up. This can also sometimes be accomplished with clever use of EQ.

While on the subject of de-essing....does using compression add 'essing' in the first place? Or is that only when you set the compressor up incorrectly? Can you use compression to get rid of 'essing'?

Compression will accent the "essing" of a vocal recording due to the fact that the quieter parts of the signal will be pulled out - if you set the threshold very carefully you can avoid making the problem worse - but then sticking a "de-esser" before the compressor will remove the problem.

De-essing isn't done by compression, it's actually frequency concious expansion (hectic!) - basically, when the "de-esser" picks up "essing" (which occurs around 5-10k) it will lower the gain of said frequencies to remove the "ess" noise.

Oh Jues, That is precious! Sorry all, this is probably my own little moment of hysteria, but the term "frequency concious expansion" is just killer! I can only imagine the limp wristed professor that came up with that one! That is too funny! It does fit the motief of the new milenian diga-speak. Like the tube and the valve, it used to be the flywheel effect.

Jues, thanks for the laugh and the education!

Presley, there are some out there, I don't have a link right now. As Jues implied, you can also minimize the effect with some well placed eq until you find one.
