Hi, i record pretty music acoustic guitar and vocals and i have an okay set up at home.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what would be good for my college dorm and recording? i have mics and cables but i record using audacity on my computer, what would you suggest would be a good firewire interface that isnt too expensive? or if there is any other set up you think would be better for a dorm. thanks.

Any two channel interface would be great for tracking acoustic guitar and a vocal. I still reccomend the UX2 (although USB not Firewire) quite often as they perform well and the drivers are very solid. The ability (not requirement) to use some modeling is very nice as well.

On two channel firewire, I could google all day but I've never used one and therefore cannot reccomend any.

When I was in college I used an M-Audio Delta 1010lt, worked great

^^ I didn't think the 1010lt had pres. but now thinking about perhaps there is a pair. That would be the thing to look out for is where or not the interface includes pres becuase if it doesn't the OP is going to need a pre as well.

I was almost completely ignorant when I used that thing, but I can say that I definitely recorded keys and guitar without pre's. Now that I think about it though my MXL 990 (the only mic I had) came with a 2 channel Audio Buddy interface.

OP...probably should ignore my recommendation. It's likely overkill anyway.

I too would think a 1010lt is a mite overkill. Plus, it's PCI, so that's kinda out.

Anyway, I too would recommend the ux2. I've used a guitarport with good results, plus there's lots of people on here who are using one to good end. No MIDI, but it doesn't sound like you need it.

I would also suggest getting a real multi-track program. Reaper comes to mind, as it's free to try, and it's uncrippled shareware. Only 60$us if you only use it for fun. But it's still fully functional, nothing is hindered. www.reaper.fm. I'd think this would be a BIG step up from audacity.

i have gone through a good many 2chan interfaces over the last few years,
it depends on your budget, i can recommend quite a few that i have personally used

currently im not in a dorm, but im in a small house with students so im in a similar but slightly better noise situation lol :P

The UX2 would be a good option in case you want to record any electric guitar due to all of the modelling options. That would allow you to record in total silence (no disturbing the neighbors) plus no ambient noise being picked up by a mic (none of the neighbors disturbing you).

I lived 3 years in a dorm and while I wasn't recording back then, sound leakage from one room to the next was definitely a problem. The last thing you want is freaking Brass Monkey leaking into your guitar track from the meathead jocks next door.
