Keyboard Amps:

So, we're going to be flying down to FL for a few weeks over xmas, and I'm taking my Korg R3 with me.

Figured I'd get a small-ish keyboard amp that I can haul around without too much trouble so I can play for the parents, etc.

I was looking real hard at the Hartke KM60 and the Roland KC150. Anyone have any opinions on others? edit: possibly looking at the KM100 as well since there's a blowout sale on zzounds.

I'm looking at about $300+ and probably $400 as the ceiling limit. Also, don't really want to haul around something heavier than 20 or 30Lbs. (about 10 to 15Kg-ish) So, a 60W amp should be fine. Not sure what the weight limit is on the flight before they start charging extra.

I'm also planning on getting a bag or case that will fit my R3 (37 keys). Probably a bag since I don't really wanna spend more than 50 or 60 bucks, and I'd like to count it as a carry-on. (any opinions there would be good too)

We'll probably be flying out on Dec. 15th after my wife's final exam, or the 16th, so plenty of time to save up and decide.

Ever try an GK MB150?

They are small, so, not a lot of sound comes out of them. But, they do sound good. And we have taken them out on gigs before for keyboards.

Hi Rob, thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of that, so I took a look at the MB150-S (couldn't find one that was just the MB150) It looks like it's a bass combo amp, and quite a bit out of my budget zone. Not entirely sure that's quite what I'm looking for. I play a lot of synth leads along with keys and bass sounds, so I figure having a horn or tweeter in the cabinet would be a good idea for getting more of the frequency range a synth is capable of producing. I may also be running some sounds from my laptop/DAW to the amp for some electronic drum sounds, depending.

I did come across a little 50W Yorkeville KB50 amp that looks promising, and a Kustom KMA 65X that has quite a bit more power at 100W, but it looks discontinued some places. I'll have to see if there's any good reviews on those two. The Roland and the Hartke seem to get some decent ratings from various sources.

Of course, I'm still all ears for opinions and recommendations. :)

Update: Okay, after reading around a lot, I think I'm definitely leaning strongly towards the Roland KC-150. I'll have to see if one of the local stores has one I can demo.

Another thought: Since they'd be about the same price range, I was pondering getting a pair of the Roland CM-30 cubes. May not be as loud, but I'd have a stereo setup. Seems people think the cubes get a pretty good sound.

Here's another idea, Carvin. They used to have a bunch of keyboard amps, but alas, I think it's been whittled down to acoustic amps:

Worth a quick look though. Most of what I've seen for carvin is they build things themselves, and usually have better quality and lower price.

Course, that's only my opinion, so take as such.

Oop, just saw your $$$ limit. Never mind, I think it's 450$.

* edit oop * looks like 399 direct, but have to add shipping, i'd think.

Cool beans, Thanks for that one pjk. That definitely looks like it would fit the bill, and for quality, (and depending on how much I make with the web geeks over the next few months) I could go a little higher on the price.

I've heard of Carvin, and from what I've heard, they make some nice stuff. Also looks like that model has an extension speaker I can order later on if needed. The weight looks good, 35 Lbs is totally doable. And the specs look good to me too. (well, as much as specs can at least without hearing it hehe)

Adding this one to my list! Well, top of the list actually. :)
