IMHO, that should be more than enough. I just built myself a new machine back in January that is probably half of what yours is.

I think I updated my profile with it.

AMD Phenim II X4 B50 (dual-core @ 3.0GHz)
4GB G.Skill PC DDR3 PC3 12800 RAM in Dual Channel
HDD: Western Digital 320GB Sata3 @ 7400RPM (for XP)
Video: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W PSU.
Audio Interface: Echo Audiofire 4

Granted I'm not running a bajilllion VST at once (but more than my old machine hehe) and I feel pretty comfortable on my system.

Since you have a fairly large HDD, I'd say it probably has something that like 5400 or 7500 RPM speed. Faster spindle speed (the speed at which the disk platters themselves spin while performing read/write/seek operations) is generally better when working on stuff like recording audio.

I run XP on my desktop still, and my laptop (aka portable studio) runs Win7, which is pretty decent from my experience so far.

In a nutshell: I think you'll be just fine.

Only thing u may want is a second hdd for a seperate recording drive. That PC is more than capable and similar to what I run.

Jeezuz, that thing could power a small NASA system...I do agree tho, rather than a single TB drive, I'd have went with a couple 500 GB drives myself...a second drive is always a good thing to have to store your audio on.

I have a 1tb external hd.
I have a problem trying to find out what kind of chip set and motherboard the pc has in it. I contacted there customer service and they said they cannot disclose the information of there supplier? What the hell is that. From looking around at other custom builds, the p55 is one of the best but thats over my head.

Honestly, if you have the money for a computer like that, I would invest in a SSD (Solid State Hard Drive.)

I would use the SSD as my main drive for audio storage and... well... everything.

I recently got one, and even on my slow compy, it sped things up.

Truly something to think about- SSD's are faster, more reliable, and even more expensive!

All you'll need at the end of your build is 3GB RAM and you'll be done!!!!!!!!

Those ssd's are sooooo expensive. I've reached the end of my budget on what i have now. I will change the 1tb hd for 2x 500gb one though. Still, worried about the motherboard/chipset.

I figure anything a core i7 is going into should be more then enough, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Out of curiosity, do you know what mobo it is?

If it's an i7 930+DDR3 then it is an X58 chipset. Cream of the crop (intel wise) and pretty darn expensive. The P55 is for most i5 processors and a few P55 based i7's. My board is an Intel reference board and performs just fine. Beings Intel is tight with the X58 chipset it really is hard to find a bad board.

Who is the manufacturer? If they won't reveal info on a purchase that expensive I would shop a different supplier.

I actually found a p.c with a better i7. It seems to have the same set up as most of the custom builds ive seen only it is a gaming pc in a case with acoustic padding.
I7-950 3.06ghz-8m intel smart cashe 1366, 6gbram dd3 triple channel, 2 1tb hdd sata II, 3 way sli support MSI x58 pro-e intel sli/crossfire, liquid cool fan/radiator, 7.1 onboard audio, nvidia geforce gt 220 1gb, 500watt sigma power sup.
To me this is an awesome build and i can get a great deal on it. I don't see any major differences.

I looked at studiocat,ADK, sweetwater(overpriced i5) and rane but to get to these specs it's $2,000 + .
