Cubase Le 4: VST instrument playback problems

I've been searching high and low for a solution to this...maybe someone here can help.

I have Kontakt 4 running as a VST instrument in Cubase Le 4. I can hear the samples just fine, but as soon as I record a track, it doesn't playback properly. It looks as though the MIDI information is recorded properly, but the playback isn't in time with the cursor, and the note durations are all garbled. I'm using a Tascam US-122L as a soundcard.

I don't think it's a computer issue -- I have 4 GBs of RAM, 2.6 GHz, Windows 7 64 bit, and never had any problems with these samples on my much older XP machine. I've updated to the latest drivers/firmware/software versions and tried messing with latency settings -- all to no avail. Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated!
