Have you got the buffers set too low - which software are you using for tracking?

MKF, as jues stated it is hard to determine your problem form just vague things. You need to tell us details, and the buffer settings he mentioned are also a good place to start as they are most often the culprit.

cracklings seems to be a commom problem when you are using MME drivers for delta cards. Try updating your driver to the latest versions that supports wdm and asio drivers. Changing buffer settings might work too but it aint as apropriate as updating the driver.

i have crackling in my headphones. and probably in my recordings too. i'm assuming its related to my gain staging problem (until i can check on it and see)

man if it might be just in your headphones, it would be worth it to test recording something and playing it back through something other than your headphones. that's part of the troubleshooting process.

this is some things that have caused crackling in my headphones;

1. bad connections. crappy radio shack terminals that don't make good connections can make crackling sounds and even stop working when bumped and moved around. solution, only buy decent cables and adapters.

2. distortion. overdriving a signal can add strange artifacts. Especially digital distortion. When the peaks clip it makes an obvious crackle. solution, proper gain staging.

3. driver type/buffer settings. i'm clueless.. this still happens to me, mostly in WaveLab when I've got lots of other programs open at the same time. solution, none yet. My ears have just learned to tune it out.

if the crackle isn't happening just on the loud peaks, it might be from something else. If it's a constant hiss then it's anothe rkind of problem

my crackle problem is apparently almost completely caused by improper gain staging. i never realized the importance of this. but i do now, thanks to yinz.
thanks mangs.

You can also get some nasty pops and cracks if you have Word Clock conflicts.
