New Development Ideas

OK, so, I am kinda jonesin' for a new feature or two to plan and develop for HRC...I have some ideas of my own, but I'd also like to hear yours...

If HRC was yours, what would be the next features you'd add?

i kinda mentioned before, a being able to see who's is currently using the forum thingy.

Thats all i got. I think you said it was a resource hog though.
im sure i can think of something else though.

I kinda figured that'd be the first thing mentioned...I'll have to architect a way to make it less of a pig.

Live update.

Instead of having to refresh to see if someone responds to a post. I know that you added subscribe last year. But, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

User's posts list / search (unless it's already there and I can't find it).

I don't know how feasible it would be but how about adding a widget/link in the link area of posts (you know bottom right corner ;) that would open the HRC player and play a random or featured song from that poster. In our Accounts we could enable/disable the feature, specify random or featured song etc. If you're feeling really energetic you could also embed the player like a couple of sites I've seen that as long as you're surfing that site you can continue to browse the forum and the song continues to play.

Failing that how about a link directly to the users music page, so we don't have to click Profile.. wait... Music... wait... play song... wait... back track couple of clicks... continue reading posts and it should probably be available whether logged in or not.

OK, the online users list is in the left hand column...we'll see how brutal on resources it is...I think I built it a little lighter this time.

Line update...subscribe does work most of the time, most of the issues I have found is spam filters catching it due to it being an automated email...

User post list, good idea, I have thought about that from time to time, but admittedly hasn't crossed my mind in a LONG time...it would help in moderating as well...someone spams, look up their account and see what other stuff they have done...

Well, you are HRC Pro, if you disable ads then the left column disappears...so you wouldn't see it, if you can see the left column, then it's at the bottom of the left column.

Also, for the dude olddog I added a "music" link in the little list o' links at the bottom of each members post. I'll have to investigate the rest of the idea...I have a random thpought of some BBCode syntax to open the player to a given song from forum posts...something like

[music:song_name]

that would create a link automagically to open the player to that tune, or whatever, haven't worked it all out in my head yet...

I didn't realize HRCPro was open to the public when I first got involved with HRC, I thought it was an exclusive membership offer or something. You could make that more obvious, or add a donate button. I was also oblivious to the subscribe button until Rob mentioned it; but that's because I'm a moron.

As far as features go, I like the user's post list feature idea a lot.

Yeah, you are totally right there...I still have to define what HRC Pro is, it's kind of in a state of limbo...I tried to add so many features, but so few were used I am in a state of confusion...partly cuz I'm a moron too...see you at the next moron anonymous meeting.

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a digg sorta system or something. But I've seen that abused so many places it's just not worth it.

Hmmm, if it was drupal powered or similar, I'd say maybe putting the equivalent of a random block to roulette between different band's music and/or websites if they have a banner or something they want to add into the roulette.

I'll try to think of something more concrete in the days to come. I've been so busy looking at the logs on our backend the past week that I'm seeing time-stamps floating above the stuff in the fridge. lol

I would like to have a shout box. That would be cool

Hmmmm, a shoutbox, I just wonder if it'd be used...that'd something I'd add, but hate it when development ends up falling into the "never used so dump it" category.

J-bot, I have had ways for users to add news (like a digg thing) before and I was the only one adding news 99% of the time...I would love to have that sort of a system, post news, comment on the new, etc, but I can't even get people posting it...so instead, any news I get goes on Facebook, which automagically feeds to HRC's twitter and then the Twitter XML feed populates HRC's Tweets tab.

One thing that I was just thinking of....

Is it possible to make a mathematical script box in the dialog window?

There has been many times that I needed to explain the math behind the principle. And sometimes, I kind of wished that the actual equation was there, just to make it pop out a little more.

Jul 10, 2010 11:15 am

Not sure what that would require...you mean simply a calculator, or actually writing out an equation...

I think my next step is going to be trying to speed this dang site up...I think the Yahoo JS libraries are slowing it down, I have to do some analysis to make sure what is slowing it down though before trying to change anything...changing the libraries being used would be a sizable job...

Writing out the equations.

That way you would be able to see how it should look. And then allow you to explain how to solve the equation.

I tried before to find a jpeg of the equation. But, depending on the size of the jpeg, it didn't render the way I would have liked it to.

I was thinking of something like the BBE code that we use already to insert bold text, or quotes. Being that I am not that familiar with code, I didn't know if this was even a possibility.

So, what prevents you from just typing it out like any other text? Are there odd characters involved or something like that?

Yeah, that and the the way of arranging them.

Instead of

Ohm X Ohm
-------------------
Ohm / Ohm

It would be in the scientific script, and would look more like the Wiki page.

If it's not a doable thing, it's all good. I was just looking to see if it could be done.

If HRC was my site, I'd make a mobile version and an option to upload videos. Then again, if it was my site, I'd also add chess.

Videos have always been in the back of my head, but it's a lot to plan for, multiformat, encoding them down to one format automatically to be handled by a player...few people appreciate how much actually goes on behind the scene at someplace like YouTube, but maybe it's time I conquer that.

I have considered mobile, but so many mobile devices simply view regular web sites any more I am not sure how necessary it'd be.

Deeb'z, in reference to Deons idea, post 2, isn't there a numerical way to represent a persons IP at login and correlate it to a person posts as a given numerical value?

I.E.

Say I logged in from 198.268.193; log that IP to me on that date.
Then, Assign me a 'user' number, say 2016.
then, assign posts a numerical value as they're logged, like this one. Lets call it: 118:78.19

If someone could write code to break this down, would it be easier to implement?

I'm a retard when it comes to this kind of thing, but would a path like this work? And if so, would it present a workload for you to implement? I have to ask because my colleges do far more complicated code everyday, and Like I said, I'm retarded.

I really am skeptical to tie IP to anything...there are the possibilities, but IP's change. I do log IP's with interactive features, but that is about it.

I understand entirely about the IP. Actually, in hindsight, we could leave that out entirely and assign a PIN to every user, notin when they log in and out, which, from a numeric stand point, would be nothing to implement in my mind. Then again, I'm a reTARD.

Oh, users have had a pin since day one of HRC...trust me, I DO have a way of tracking individual users...along with which IP's they've been on, cross referencing, geolocating and more...I've banned entire cities at times for short periods.

You are all my bitches. hahaha ;-)

I miss my stats page :( Is that a pro feature?

Also, I just want more storage space. I know pro gives you 24MB but I still found myself deleting older songs to add new ones. Don't know how your cost is but I would definitely pay extra for more space alone. I know that is not dev oriented but just something on my wish list.

Jul 14, 2010 03:02 pm

stats is a pro feature and you can get more space if you buy more pro subscriptions, just specify as such when ordering.

I gotta figure out a good way to do that...but you can, a couple have!

I've been guilty of requesting features in the past and then not using them. So I'll let everybody else do it this time :)

Every once in a while I think of some streamlining kind of things to suggest but I usually forget about it. I can't think of anything off the top of my head right now but I'll reply if I do.

The site has come a long way even since I joined. Was it still under the dbmasters domain in 2003?

I think that the first few times I came here it was under dbmasters but it soon got its own domain name. It's definitely the online community that I've belonged to the longest. Anything else I belonged to that long ago has faded into dust by now hehehe.

Tad, the community, in it's earliest form started around 1996 or 1997, I had it at Hypermart, which was a decent free host back then, but then they started forcing popup and popunder ads on their free sites, so I bought the dbmasters domain for my business and bought hosting, moving the community to it...it was called "Home Recording Central" then, and I wanted to by homerecordingcentral.com but the dude that owns homerecording.com had already squatted it...so we went with "connection" to keep the "HRC" acronym...of course it's now the same acronym as a human rights campaign, but eh...

I bought this domain in march 2003, spent a couple months building it out and it's been that ever since.

Well, I have seemed to speed the site up a bit by streamlining some of the JavaScript and minimizing their file sizes...seems to have helped quite a bit...sorry, I know that isn't sexy or cool development that is readily noticeable, but I have to get the existing site performing better before adding even more!

Well, I'm pretty happy with the speed now...and got to stick with the Yahoo YUI for the JavaScript, thank God...

Not sure what's next, Deon, probably not much sexy, cool stuff...I REALLY have to define and publicize HRC Pro...and automate subscription expirations, I am HORRIBLE at checking that stuff, and worse yet, I feel bad when I notice some folks are expired...I'd give it all to everyone if I could...but before I do that I need to make sure folks know they are expiring...so I need to automate that someplace...

How about adding a Music Licensing forum? There's plenty of info for everything up to that point, and I could see an aggregation of those types of topics for members to learn how to (if interested) improve on gaining returns on there writing, not to mention any help it could add to seo etc...

Also how about a link from members profiles to the articles they have contributed?

The contributed articles is on the list, actually, it'll kinda go along with the list of posts they have added as well...so good call on that.

Licensing..decent idea, but would be small...adding to that perhaps a forum of legal issues as a whole, licensing, copyright, insurance, etc...not a bad idea.

@Deon - Thanks, mate.

Wow, so the community has been around since the mid 90s? Multitrack recording for me at that point involved 2 boom boxes, bouncing tracks from one to the other, with me playing along with one and recording on the other!

After a refresh, the javascript 'close menu' on the tool bar is WAY faster.

Nice.

That always hung for a few seconds or more. I knew it was your new JS platform stuff, but figured it was worth it.

Nice to see it speed up.

Awesome, I'm glad it's not only me seeing the improvement!

Actually, I ended up staying with the Yahoo YUI library, and just found a vastly more efficient loader...with so many tools being used (menu, buttons, tabbed interface and datagrid) it wound up being a ton of http requests, with this loader it's one request for the loader and a request for a single consolidated file of all the functions at once. Awesomely cool.

I am seeing random choking of the menu now and then on my work laptop, but never my home laptop...weird...

Tad, yeah, it's been a hell of a year for ya man...I feel for ya.

The site seems to be loading nearly instantaneous now. My work computer always loaded the page really slow, but probably within just the past week it seems remarkably faster. I think it loads within a second now whereas it would nearly take 30 seconds.

Pffff, not for me! the java stuff at the top of this page works a little better in IE than FF but I still find myself sitting on my hands while the popup goes away.

its not a popup its a java thing...it happens on every computer I've ever accessed HRC from using IE or FF. It's a big gray box that has all the site options listed vertically instead of horizontally. Most of the time the page finishes loading and the menu corrects itself, other times, the menu list isn't complete and never loads then I have to use google like an HRC site map. I like Chrome, maybe I'll go back to it.
