routing options

usually ive been using my mixer monitors and usb like this

alt 3-4 >>> input of uca200 usb
output of uca200 usb >>> monitors

but yesterday i read a page that said to hook it all up like this

alt 3-4 >>> input of uca200 usb
output of uca200 usb >> line 7/8 channel
control room >>> monitors

when using ^^that^^ setup, the very identity of the music changes,
panning is enchanced, but the bass is gone and the highs are enchanced. im thinking that this is because all sounds coming from the pc are going through the mixer, which sucks out the goodness of the sound, before going to the control room then monitors.

which is the better routing option?
ive read that the latter is the right way to do it, but why does it sound like crap?
and was there anything wrong with how i set it up the first time?

thanks for answering yet another pipe-quest, i do appreciate the help

Either way is fine, having the uca's output going to the mixer just gives more routing options/control. It really shouldn't sound any different. Try routing the output of your uca to the last 2 stereo inputs of your mixer, then depending on the mixer you can route the signal to either the main mix, or the control room or both. If your mixer has a -10/+4 button make sure it's in the -10dB setting.

I agree in that it shouldn't sound any different, but uhh.. it does, hence the reason i posted this topic :S.

"Try routing the output of your uca to the last 2 stereo inputs of your mixer,"

thats what i said ive done, u mustve looked past it:
alt 3-4 >>> input of uca200 usb
output of uca200 usb >> line 7/8 channel
control room >>> monitors

i guess im okay with my original settings, but somehow it just doesnt feel right.

shortest signal chain is usually best.
