Hello all this is my first post. I started learning to record and mix last year and this is my second real concerted effort to get something tangible. Following is a clip from the intro, it is a heavy metal track. Any opinions on the tone, or ideas that can help me shape the overall mix into something better would be deeply appreciated!

May 28, 2010 09:20 pm hey Charlie,
Yeah man i like. Cant really comment on these computer speakers but it sounds sweet.
Only thing i will say is, and this just a mater of personal taste, maybe the keys are a touch loud and i cant hear any bass guitar. But its more than likely these speakers mate.
good stuff, would like to hear the the finished prody.
May 28, 2010 11:13 pm I'm gonna be totally straitforward with ya, it sounds very.... Theme-song-y. Which honestly, i TOTALLY dig the way this sounds! Sounds good man. Professional really, I just hope thats what you were going for. Also, i agree with deon. The synth is a bit too loud.
May 29, 2010 10:04 am Thanks yall! I agree the synths are very loud, didnt translate to the levels I thought they were at when I rendered. I am new to synths especially so Im gonna take a look into mixing them properly. My system is a little bass heavy, so Im going to apply lo freq filter to accomodate. I hope itll have vox one day but kind of hard to just nab an 8 octave voice! Of course it isnt finished there are many lead sections to lay down. Will post new clips soon.
May 31, 2010 04:55 pm Ok I did some work on it,beefed upt he guitars, turned the bass up in the mix, synths lowered. I am digging the sound, I have a few mistakes to correct in the bassline and guitars, and the leads to track sometime this week.

Jun 02, 2010 04:53 pm Sounds great on my end. Nothing particularly sticks out at me as wrong, and everything is good and balanced. The bass sounds fine here as well.
As per regards to the "theme-song" sound, it struck me as more video-game sounding, such as a cutscene from the MegaMan X series, or maybe a shmup like R-Type.
Arrangement-wise, I kinda trying to decide if it sounds more progressive to me, or more medley-ish. There's several defined sections with their own character and groove. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation.
This is a personal opinion, but I feel like a strong lead melody would help put the finishing touch on, and solidify/flesh out the track as a whole. I can see a good 'n' dirty saw-type synth carrying the lead. A lead-guitar would be fine as well. Particularly starting around 2:07 where the guitar is mostly chugging the same chord. Some arpeggiation would be a nice way to add some meat, and help support the rhythm as well.
Just throwing ideas off the backboard there, so take it with a grain of salt. It's your track, and I think you've got a solid foundation going and you could easily add more to it.
Jun 04, 2010 09:32 am I am tracking the leads at the moment. Lots of harmonies to add still. The vocals play a huge part in shaping the song. Sounds completely different with vox. This is a cover of a Lost Horizon song, not mine lol. I am doing this as practice as I have noone else to record. If you want to hear the actual song in all its greatness here :D
