Cubase Mono to stereo

Hey there.
Can anyone help with my cubase LE4 problem? I record drums input mono but then need to mix pan for stereo effects. I can't record in stereo (all mics are mono inputs) but I really just need a stereo balanced output to pan separate tracks differently - anyone know how?

I'm a bit confused by your post, how'd you record the drums anyway? a single overhead? or all the mics into a mixerboard and out to your interface? If you're using a mixer, does your interface support stereo inputs? Even something like the UCA202 will handle stereo.

Anyway, i'm sure there is a way to convert the single mono wav file into a duplicate stereo track, though i'm not sure how. But why exactly do you need to do this? The stereo track won't really give you more control, as it's still a mono source. There will be a slight increase in volume, and the file size will be larger, but what FX do you need stereo for? mostly my own curiosity of what you're trying to accomplish.

Idea, maybe export the solo'd drum track in cubase to a stereo track and export it to your project folder. Then you could import that file into cubase. But again, i can't see how this would benefit you, its going to be stereo, but no different than having 2 separate mono tracks of the same file playing. (i'm prone to being proven wrong of course). If you want a true stereo recording of your drums, you're going to need at least 2 overhead mics. And if you close mic, you could buy a mixer that pans, set it all up the way you'd like it analog first (monitor from cubase), and send both outputs to your audio interface. It'd be a good second best to having an 8 i/o interface.

I know i'm getting a little ahead of myself here. lol. Sorry about that, a bad habit of mine.

Thanx for such a prompt reply. You'll have to bear with me, this is my first project with individual tracks for each drum mic - my tech language is poor:
I am using 2 condenser o/heads, snare, kick, 3tom mics. They are all set up on seperate mono inputs through firewire mixer (PhonicHB18). Every other recording program I have used show the input for each track streaming a stereo feed (although, this is probably just a duplicate signal of L mono onto R channel). I get your exporting idea but there must be a way of getting that mono signal for each input duplicated as the recording streams in.....
all this is in view of creating the stereo effect of having the drums sounding like they come from a different area in relation to audio space (Pan R or L) i.e. snare 60L floor tom 60R. This must be an easy fix, however cubase has puzzled me from the start...thanks

No problem. And i hope i don't sound condescending or anything, i don't mean to. I'm just trying to understand what you're trying to accomplish.

So, all you want is just a drum kit set up in the stereo field, with wide overheads, toms and a snare that "roll across" the field, right? For that a mono track is actually what you want. You can still pan a mono track in a stereo field. Just click and drag the panning slider in cubase and see.

If you really do need stereo files for some reason, i remembered how thats done. Pretty simple too. But first try the mono thing yourself. Its even more simple, and will save you twice the hard drive space. I think thats a better solution than doing the exact same thing, with a stereo wav file.

Yuppers, mono all the way.

Although we track in mono for the most part, the output from you daw is stereo and panning mono tracks is how you get that stereo feild.

My (4 piece) drum panning (I pan as if looking at a drummer on stage).
